Anatomy of a Breakdown Chap 7

    Bette and Tina,

You guys need your time. We had so much fun.

See you guys soon. We love you!

    Kit, Shane, Alice and Dana.

Bette smiles at the paper in her hand as she walks over to Tina who is patiently waiting for her by the door. She hands the paper over to Tina who reads it and smiles.

“We’re lucky you know?” She says softly.

“Very.” Bette takes Tina’s hand in hers. “C’mon.” She guides Tina down the hallway to the spare bedroom. She looks at Tina as she grasps the door handle.

“I just want to say I know that this doesn’t mean we’re back together or that you even want this but I wanted to do it, for you, for me, for her.” She opens the door to the spare bedroom and allows Tina to see the room. The walls were a soft yellow, one wall with a mural of a park scene. Directly in front of Tina there is a white day bed, to the left of the day bed stands a round crib with soft fabric dropping down from the ceiling surrounding it, to the right of the bed was a changing table armoire.

“Tina I know you haven’t told me I could be part of baby’s life.”

                “Bette…”

“It’s okay if you aren’t ready Tee. I understand. I just wanted you to know that no matter what happens you always have a home here.”

“I don’t even know what to say.” Tina steps into the room and takes it all in. “When did you do all of this?” She asks looking around the room. Bette lets out a chuckle.

“After I left the Planet yesterday I picked everything up. I spent the rest of the morning and afternoon painting and building the furniture. Then the gang came over to help me plan out the party. After they left I spent the rest of the night putting the room together.”

                “When did you sleep?”

                “No sleep for the weary.”

“You mean you’ve been up for almost two days?”

“I snuck in a nap or two in the wee hours of the morning but coffee and red bull are miracle workers.” She confesses, laughing at her own insanity.

“Jesus Bette. You should’ve told me.”

“It’s fine. Strangely enough I’m not really that tired.” Tina laughs.

                “Not tired?”

“Okay maybe a little.” Tina wraps her arms around Bette.

“C’mon let’s get you in bed.” She leads Bette into the bedroom they once shared. The familiarity brings Tina a bit of comfort. Bette sits on the edge of the bed watching Tina as she retrieves pajamas from a drawer. Bette smiles wondering if she is dreaming or not.

“Here can you change into these?” Tina asks handing Bette the pajamas.

“I think so.” Bette goes to stand but suddenly feels the weight of not having slept. She sits back down quickly eliciting a laugh from Tina.

“Just stay there.” Tina says. Tina kneels and removes Bette’s shoes. Bette admires Tina from her seat.

“I should be doing this for you.” Bette says breaking Tina’s concentration.

“Well you can do it for me next time.”

“Next Time?” Tina nods her head as she stands in front of Bette grabbing the ties that hold Bette’s dress together and begins to unwrap her like a gift; she feels a tingle shoot through her body. She begins to peel it off Bette who is staring at her intently. Bette reaches up to touch Tina’s cheek.

“Stay with me tonight.” She whispers.

                “Bette I don’t… I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Just to sleep tee.” Tina looks down at a heavy lidded Bette. She smiles at Bette’s childlike innocence. “I just want to hold you.” Tina knows she should refuse but how can she deny this woman, this woman who captured her heart all those years ago and who seems to still hold that power over her.

    1. glad they r talking… and ii agree… that night when tina left bette and melvin at dinner… bette should of got up and left too… great chapter… PPS

    2. Hey denEmat, I’m really enjoying your tale. Delayed honesty is soooo much harder than telling the truth in the moment….the delay gives us too much time to speculate and imagine all kinds of responses, outcomes and it even alters reality somewhat. And the results are often as immediately painfully as ultimately rewarding. Its good that our girls are getting honest with each other. Thanks for writing. PPS.

    3. What a way to end a beautiful party with friends and family. Poor Bette, falling asleep when all she wants to do is spend time with Tina. Maybe they should not stay in the same bed but darn it, I think that it is a great idea.
