Angel – past and present
chapter 2
Going back – Angel at age 8
“Do you think we ought to see if Angel should get into one of these kids’ soccer leagues?” Bette asked.
She was reading about the children’s soccer in the school newsletter to parents. Tina looked up from her activity in the kitchen.
“I would rather have her play baseball or basketball if she wants to do team sports,” commented Tina. “Actually, if anything, we should see if she’s interested in tennis. She can play that her entire life. We can talk to Dana about this.”
“Hmm,” muttered Bette, a woman who was completely uninterested in sports, but who wanted the best for their daughter.
“We’ll ask her if she has any interest in any of these sports,” concluded Tina.
The comfortable silence descended again on this contented couple as Tina worked on preparing lunch and Bette finished reading the school publication and picked up the newspaper. The silence was broken frequently as Bette read or paraphrased different stories from the paper she knew would interest Tina.
Tina talked about her job at the movie studio and also about things involving the house, their social life and their daughter.
“Hi, sweetest,” Bette said to her daughter.
Angie had come into the living room and sat down next to Bette on the sofa. Tina watched them over the bar that separated the kitchen and the living room. She always loved eavesdropping on the conversations between Bette and their child.
“Mama, I don’t like my name.” And Bette had put the paper down in her lap.
“You don’t like your name?” Bette usually repeated Angie’s opening question if it was on a subject she wasn’t ready for. It gave her a few extra seconds to think.
“No.”
“What’s wrong with ‘sweetest’?”
“Mama,” said Angie with an eight-year-old’s exasperation. “That’s not my name. My name is Angelica.”
Bette deliberately folded the paper and put it on the floor. She put an arm around Angie and kissed her curly head. These actions were also designed to give Bette more time.
“Well, Angel, we named you for our city because it means so much to us.”
“West Hollywood?” Angie had asked, puzzled.
Tina, who had heard every word, had to bite her lip to keep from laughing at Angie’s response.

exiting! Cant wait! hope you post soon!
that ws just so damned cute — i loved it
Enjoying this story Pancha. Let it continue.
What a sweet little thumbnail sketch of a child’s growing understanding of sexuality. And nobody got hurt, very good to know. None of this applies to my experience however, my brothers and I know for a fact our parents never had sex.
You know I love anything you write. This is another that I’ll love as well. One can never get enough of the B&T love, Pancha-style! Although, considering the poker-hot love that B&T evinced in ‘What is Love’, I would have predicted that they would have a house full of children, at least two or three. What’s up with the singleton child, Pancha? I’m sure you will explain it all for us. Thank you for your writing. It is as clear as glass, and that’s a GOOD thing!
BTW, I agree with Funnyone, my parents never had sex either. I would have gone deaf, dumb and blind if I’d witnessed what Sweetness had. B&T make wonderful parents. Thank you for the beguiling stories!
It’s always more intersting to see the couple’s intimacy from others’ eyes. =P
This was so excellent. The tone , the conversations, the words just pitch perfect. Your story is nuanced, thew comments insightful and real such as this one from Angie “Angie smiled at her parents. That kind of affection usually meant that they had made love the night before.” So perceptive. You showed us what it was like growing up in that home instead of telling us.
love this… can’t wait for the next chapter
Very well done. Thanks for such sensitivity.
This os incredible. I love how you work the mind of a child and bring it to light for the rest of us. Wonderful chapter.
First time commenting on your stories and just want to say that I’ve enjoyed your stories. Glad that you’re continuing with story line from “What is Love” and “A Lifetime” with the addtition of Angelica. Chidren sometimes do know more than what parents think they know. Can’t wait to read about B&T’s reactions to what Angel has to tell them. Thanks.
Most excellent!
My comment today won’t be very insightful as my head feels like it might explode any second. All I can really say is this chapter was really sweet and I think Angelica got some of her perceptiveness from her talks with Shane. Oh and my parents only had sex 1 time and that was so my mom got pregnant with me. At least that’s what I like to think anyway. ;p
this is so very sweet, i love the back and forth thing, so we get past and present and so nice to see that B&T are still together after 18 years and still love each other…i hope Tina won’t freak out about Angel’s love for girls and Bette will be okay with the other things…great story….(btw, i too wish you were in SF, it would be a great honor to meet you)
this is a really great story….pls continue
Got to love Shane for stepping in and explaining the no pajamas thing. Now that is a loving family relationship. I wonder how Tina will take it that Angie does indeed like girls better than boys. I also wonder what else that Angie needs to say to her parents. My heart is overflowing with joy.
What an absolute treat to have you back. This chapter is once again proof of how much you have been missed. Thanks!
Nice to have you back! Really enjoying this story. Thank you.
Pancha, would you kindly let me know if I need to purchase popcorn and beer for Angelica’s impending conversation with her parents…who am I kidding? I always have beer. Just let me know about the popcorn. Awesome story and chapter!
I just caught up with this. Glad you are back. This seems like its gonna be a very cool story. Thanks for taking the time.
So glad to see you writing andsuch a wonderful story. If I would haveseen my parents like that I would still be therapy. I just told my grand daughter I need to mop the Kitchen floor before I went to bed, She said why its not sticky , Damn I live with her. Loved this chapter thanks
I’m thinking Angelica was/is a handful. What a sweet family.
Loved this chapter. I hope Tina will takes Angelica’s news well.
Thank you for such a loving and well written chapter.
So great to see another story from you Pancha. I always enjoy whatever you write.
Great loving it!
Everything is so… intimate, I feel like I’ve warm honey flowing down all over me when I read. Lovely. :)
Aww, it was so sweet to see Bette and Tina’s love through Angelica’s eyes. Not the mention the coolness of Auntie Shane. Great story, looking forward to more!
love the easy flow of the story..post soon!!!!!!
So glad that Angie has Shane to ask questions and get her information. This question and answer session was handled with much sensitivity, carefully and much love and understanding. Shane is certainly Yodah for Angie. All children need someone they can talk with. Very well done Pancha. Great chapter, btw. Can hardly wait for the next.
Loved the conversation between Angie and Shane, you gave me tips, I know what I’ll say to my kids. I love the way how you’re describing the years in between
so nice! i like the way you used the past and the present! this is very very good. hope read you soon.
pancha…I hope you are writing the next chapter right this minute. I am enjoying it very much.
Excellent story, so sweet and light, just what I need…
