“Portard … really Elizabeth?” Everyone laughed at Melvin’s astonished expression.
“Hey I also suggested Kennter.” Bette defended herself.
“Well that’s a little better, but I’m glad you two settled on hyphenating her last name. Angelica Marie Kennard-Porter has a nice ring to it, and suits her perfectly.” Melvin said looking into the face of an angel.
He’d been holding the newborn for an hour, refusing to let Bette or Tina put her down once she fell asleep in his arms. He’d commented more than once how much the baby resembled Bette when she was born. She had a shock of dark curly hair that they could already tell would be impossible to tame. Her complexion was one or two shades lighter than Bette’s, but she had Tina’s eyes; hazel green with brown specks. She smiled often in her sleep as if she was having happy dreams, and Melvin was quick to coin it the Porter smile. All thoughts of biology and the fact that she was only a Porter by name was long forgotten by the proud grandpa.
Both his daughters were exceptionally beautiful babies and likely Tina was too but even they did not compare to his granddaughter. She was absolutely the most beautiful baby he’d ever laid eyes on. She also had a great disposition, only getting fussy when she was hungry or needed changing. Otherwise she was content to be passed from one set of loving arms to another. Bette and Tina were not practicing attachment parenting, but they too had a hard time putting her down.
It was a month since Tina gave birth, and things could not have gone any better. Two days before her due date she and Bette decided to have a date night knowing that once the baby was born, couple time would be rare.
Many a time in the past several weeks leading up to the birth of their daughter, Bette would find herself so overjoyed at the prospect of being a mother, that she would just stop whatever she was doing, and take Tina in her arms and say, “Thank you.”
“What for?” Tina would ask enjoying the affection.
“For today. For doing this incredible thing for us. For loving me, for giving me another chance, for trusting me again, …” and the reasons would go on and on until Tina muffled her wife’s voice with a passionate kiss that would invariably lead to making love.
