    Bette’s Wrath

    “You do? Really?”

    “I really do.”

Tina smiled. Tina opened her mouth and Bette placed her thumb on her lips.

Bette turned to face Tina with tears in her eyes. Tina placed her hand on Bette’s cheek. Bette leaned into the contact. She told Tina she’d never said those words to anyone before. Tina remembered Bette speaking of her mother and her father, how her mother left her physically and her father abandoned her emotionally. Tina listened with all of her heart, waiting until Bette finished purging her soul.

“…so please don’t feel obligated to say anything back especially if you don’t mean it.”

    “Are you done,” Tina asked.

Bette blinked rapidly and finally shook her head yes. Tina placed her other hand on Bette’s opposite cheek, cradling her face. Then she moved her left leg over Bette’s lap, straddling her, still holding her face in place, making sure she didn’t look away. Bette instinctively placed her hands on Tina’s hips.

“I love you too and I’m not going to leave. I’m never going to stop loving you. Ever. You are stuck with me. Baby, did you hear that?”

Bette smiled. They stayed that way for hours. Kissing and looking deeply into each other’s eyes.

“Tina,” Julia interrupted her thoughts, repeating the question. “Why don’t you think you deserve Bette’s forgiveness?”

“Because she told me she loved me FIRST,” Tina yelled. “And before I could say it back, she talked about how her mother and father both abandoned her. She poured her entire heart out. She was warning me not to say it back if I wasn’t in it a hundred percent and I looked her in her eyes and told her I would never ever leave her. So, don’t you understand? I betrayed her…twice. And I don’t know how to fix it. The look in her eyes…Oh God…”

Julia let Tina sit with those feelings before responding.

    “Tina, you can’t fix this.”

Julia kept talking before Tina could respond.

“But…but, but if you truly love Bette and you want her back as you say you do, you can start rebuilding her trust. From what all you’ve told me about Bette, I believe she still loves you too. You just have to remind her of why and that’s going to take a lot of work.”
