    Breathe- Chapter 4

Bette pulled her car into the garage and watched the door in her rear-view mirror until it had securely closed. Since Tina had fallen asleep again clutching Bettes hand to her face, Bette reached across with her left had and shifted the car into park.

Awkwardly, she tried to reach through the steering wheel to turn the car off and pull her keys from the ignition. Having successfully turned the engine off, she finally decided to leave the keys right where they were.

She turned her attention to Tina and tenderly stroked her face with her thumb. She applied a little more pressure until she saw Tinas eyes flutter and finally open. Tina realized she still had Bettes hand, but rather than releasing it completely she dropped her hand to her lap, taking Bettes with her.

Were here, Bette said softly. I want to get you inside. You stay right there. I need to get an evidence bag out of the trunk for your clothes and then I will come get you.

Tina looked down at her clothes, the memories of the day flooding back. Without saying a word Tina leaned her head back, squeezed her eyes shut and released Bettes hand.

Bette quickly retrieved an evidence bag, and then was at Tinas door. Knowing the pathology of flight or fight syndrome in victims, Bette cautiously opened the door wanting to make sure she didnt startle Tina. Even though Bette was careful, and Tina knew she was coming, the young womens eyes flew open and her face reflected the panic she was feeling.

Bette reached for her. Its OK, Tina Im right here. Bette said as she offered a steadying hand to Tinas arm and helped her out of the car. While Tinas face said she was sorry, she still offered no words.

Bette stayed close to Tinas, almost carrying her into the house. She still held Tina to her side as she crossed and placed her briefcase and evidence bag on the table just inside the garage door.

Even in her state of shock, Tina couldnt help but notice the stunning waters of Lake Washington out the windows of the kitchen and adjoining living room in Bettes home. Tina finally found her voice, not in regards to her friends death, or the horror of the days events, but simply in response to the view from Bettes home.
