Can we get it back – Chapter 8

Tina hadn’t gotten around to get herself an apartment. She had stayed at the hotel all this time, but Bette told her to get one of the spare rooms at the house. Since she was going to be there all the time anyway. So she had been by the hotel the day before, while Angie stayed with Bette and paid for the room and packed everything into the car. She had bought a new car, the week before, so that made it easier to move around and she got to drive a good car, not an old rental from the hotel. What she had bought was a Tesla 3. Good enough for her. She knew Bette had the X version, but she didn’t need such a big car. But she knew she wanted an electric car. Dark grey was the color she chose.

“Have you packed everything?” Tina asks Bette as she walks around the room to see if they had missed something.

“I think so.” Bette says slowly, sitting on the bedside. When she started to get up from bed the week before, they discovered that she had some trouble with her balance. Tests were taken, and the doctors believe they are just temporary. She just had to train and put in the work to get her balance back. A few appointments with a physiotherapist was set up to get her going on a few exercises she could easily do at home with the help of Tina. As of now, she has trouble walking, so a wheelchair had been provided to her for a month. They believed that was enough time to have her walking close to normal again. As for the following treatment. They had to wait for the head to heal properly before they continued with radiation. The hospital would contact her for that and also follow up on the days she came by for checkups.

“So, ready to go home?” Tina asks with a smile as she stops in front of Bette, putting her hand on Bette’s arms and softly runs it up and down in a soothing rhythm.

“So, ready.” Bette replies with a smile on her own.

“Okay, let’s go then.” Tina says and pull the chair next to Bette and helps her into it. The bag she placed on Bette’s lap, she holds on to that. Then Tina wheels her out of the room. Once they get to the nurses station, a few of the regular nurses that had been there the whole time Bette had been here was there, saying goodbye to her and wishing her good luck and a speedy recovery. Once all that were done, Tina continued to wheel her towards home.

Bette was a little nervous about getting home. She knew there was a possibility that Tina would come home to her again, but they hadn’t had the talk yet and she was afraid that this chance would be somehow disturbed by the situation she’s in. Would Tina really take all this on? Could she ask that of her? What would be different now from before? She was in deep thought, so she didn’t hear Tina saying that they were at the car. Tina saw the look on Bette’s face.

“Bette, you okay? You seemed a mile away?” Tina asks concerned.

“No, I’m okay. Just thinking.” She replies and gives her a half smile.

“Okay… Let’s get you home. You need help getting into the car?” Tina asks as she opens the door and pushes the wheelchair as close as possible.

“No, I think can handle it. Thanks.” Bette replies as she slowly stands up and shifts so she could just fall into the seat. Once she was in, Tina took the wheelchair, put it together to half the size and put it in the back. Bag in the backseat. Then they were ready to go home. She gets in and starts the car. She looks over at Bette who has leaned her head back and closed her eyes.

“You sure you’re okay?” Tina asks softly while putting her hand on Bette’s left shoulder.

“I’m fine Tina. It’s just the tiredness that creeps up on me.” Bette replies, eyes still closed.

“Okay, but please let me know otherwise, okay?” Tina says with a concerned voice.

“I promise.” Bette says and opens her eyes and move her head slightly and gives Tina a loving smile.

“Good.” Tina relaxes and starts on the drive to Bette’s home.

    Comments

    1. Okay…on their way home and recovery. Bette, please do not overthink this. Let things develop as they will naturally. With some time and rehab, thing will be back to normal physically for Bette.

As to the tiredness for Bette? I have had a couple of surgeries. Each time the recovery to the actual surgery was fairly quick – a week to two weeks. But the recovery form the anesthesia seemed to take forever. I was told form my surgeon that it takes most people a full month to get it out of your system and get back to your regular energy level. It was absolutely true for me. I had the need for a 2 hour nap every day even after having slept for 8 hours the night before. I was tired and sleepy. And Bette was under an anesthesia for more than 6 hours. So tiredness is a natural response for several weeks following the procedure..

Great story… thanks for giving this to us.

    2. I only started now to read your story. Happy that Bette is ok. She’ll have to work for her recovery but she has enough reasons to be very motivated.

I hope that Tina and Bette are able to talk about everything that went wrong between them and find a new basis for their relationship.

      Looking forward to more.

    3. Interesting – Bette don’t have a job, right? And she didn’t have her a some time – she running for mayor but it’s not job. Where she get a money? And if she ever had medical insurance? Because if not – this treatment is very expensive, she can’t afford it.
