Chapter 1 – List and More List

    Angie:  Like what?

Bette:  This one fraternity would take all of its pledges to a wooded area on the edge of town about midnight blind folded. Then they would require them to strip off all their clothes and then tell them that they had to be back at the frat house by 6:00 am the next morning.  So, there were about twelve 18-year-old boys stark naked running through town trying to make it back on time so they could be members of the frat house. Some would be caught by the police and arrested. Some would hide as best they could and try not to be seen. If the weather was cold, it might cause hypothermia which would require treatment. It is difficult to get help when you’re naked in a college town. Some have required heavy drinking which have caused some severe problems. Some forced their members to perform sex acts on others which they would not normally perform. All of these things are to be kept secret and never to be disclosed to anyone who did not participate. But some people talk. And since there is always a group of pledges, there is the pressure not to look weak or unworthy in front of your peers. So, the tradition continues on. And all of these exercises are design to prove that the pledges are worthy to be members. Most of it is humiliating and degrading, but some of it is downright dangerous.

    Angie:  Oh my god…how horrible.

Bette:  You need to do your own research on these things. Find an older member and ask them why they are a member and what was their pledge life was like. And look to their body language to see if they are telling the truth. Then ask a 2nd one and see if the story matches the 1st one.  If they are significantly different, then someone is lying. If they are alike, well it stands a better chance of being truthful, but there is also chance they have conspired to hide the truth. Anyone who is trying to deceive you, you need to stay away from. Life is hard without dealing with people who are trying to deceive you.

Bette and Angie walked out of the room and found Tina in the hall.
