Chapter 10
***
With the success of Provocations Bette received a sizable cash bonus as part of her compensation package from the CAC. She used part of the money to fund that year’s Porter Art Gallery Scholarship which was offered to under privileged children ages six to sixteen that showed aptitude for the fine arts. The scholarship was part of the arts program that Bette founded and funded at the West Hollywood Family and Youth Center. Bette and Peggy were both strong believers in fostering young talent, and as such entered into a joint business venture as co-owners of the Big Bear Lake Camp for the Arts (BBLC for the Arts).
Bette and Peggy partnered with their good friends Phyllis Kroll the Chancellor and Leigh Ostin the Dean of the School of Arts at California University (CU) to design the programs. They employed CU graduate students majoring in the arts to do spring and summer break internships to staff it. Bette also recruited three artists annually to volunteer their time and talent for a few weeks each summer to teach an art course in their preferred medium.
BBLC for the Arts was located approximately two hour’s drive from Los Angles on 250 acres of beautifully landscaped lakefront property. Bette and Peggy each owned a three bedroom cabin and several guest cottages that could only be accessed from a private road separate from the public areas of the camp.
Bette spent one week a month during the summer at the art camp. The Porter Art Gallery scholarships covered the tuition for six children (three boys and three girls) to attend the programs. Bette would take a special interest in these children as she escorted the small group to cultural events in the surrounding area including plays, art festivals, museum visits and the like to expose their young minds to different facets of the arts and culture. The camp was fully self-sufficient and staffed to offer theater, dancing, acting, music and literary programs along with the usual sports, swimming, fishing, boating, horseback riding, hiking and many other activities.
BBLC for the Arts offered a wonderfully unique and enriching experience for children and young adults who had an interest in pursuing careers in literature, music, performing and or fine arts.

Thanks so much for this chapter Bat; I see here that Bette is still like ‘I have nothing to do with Tina’s problems’. She is a little worry for knowing nothing from her ex, but that’s all. They were together for 7 years, and Bette doesn’t acknowledge any responsibility in their break out (personally I think Bette is in denial), as if everything was just Tina’s doing. I like the possibility of Bette dating a psychologist (she needs help in that department). It’s curious now that I see after ten chapters, on one side Tina feels very guilty, suffocated and alone and in the other side Bette feels the opposite than Tina, a victim, ready to let go and wrapped and protected by her friends. I don’t want to take sides with any of them but I feel a little unfairness in this relationship I don’t know if it is the cause or consequence of their dysfunction or if it is just part of it. Thank you again, I like so much you story, it makes me think on their situation; and I’m very captivated to know where you are taking us, I’m wanting eagerly for your next update.
Hello there BAT,been a long time, glad to see you posting again.Synopsis of what i understand so far,TINA/BETTE are having problems and broke up(not good)TINA then decides not to go the toy route but the real mccoy(so not good)Then she decides to date HENRY(major turn-off)and engages in hide the banana(i’m feeling squeemish)with this guy but pines for BETTE(therapyanyone?)BETTE is still hoping and not hoping to reconsile with her wife(ahemm),so now we have total dysfunction. Can TINA get her self together or will BETTE continue towards moving on?Talking is a little late for BETTE if she wants TINA to listen to what she has to say even if TINA does talk the shame alone of what she has done will drive her further away i think, but your story and like everyone else i too will wait. BE SAFE and hurry back.THANKS,
