    Chapter 10

(Bette) Could you just move it?

    (Alice) Jesus, I will

Alice shakes her head and picks up her drink.

(Alice) Is this mood because Tina’s away?

(Bette frowns) I’m not in a mood

Alice raises her eyebrows and Shane suppresses a smile as she has a sip of beer.

(Bette) I just want you to get your car out of my fucking driveway, is that too much to ask?

    Alice raises her hands.

(Alice) Oh my God, no problem. It’ll be gone by tonight

    (Bette) Thank you

Shane has another sip of beer and examines Bette for a moment.

    (Shane) How is Tina?

    (Bette) She’s fine

(Dana) You’ve been speaking with her while she’s away?

    (Bette) Yes

    (Alice) A lot?

    (Bette) Yes. Why?

(Alice sighs) I don’t know, maybe speak to her more

Shane gives a small laugh and Bette looks at her. Shane clears her throat and frowns as she focuses her attention back on her drink.

Early the next week, Tina’s hotel room. Tina is hurriedly drinking a coffee and gathering her belongings in preparation for an afternoon of meetings. She talks to Bette on her cell as she moves around the room.

    (Bette) And how’s everything going?

(Tina smiles) It’s great. Busy, but I love the atmosphere

    Bette nods.

(Tina) I’m looking forward to coming home though

    Bette smiles.

(Bette) Have you organised your flight?

(Tina) Yes, I’ll arrive late Sunday. I have an event here Sunday evening, and then I’ll head straight to the airport. I’m hurrying back for an early meeting Monday

    Bette nods.

(Bette) So, Monday night maybe? Do you want to have dinner?

Tina pauses for a moment and bites her lip.

(Tina) Or I could come straight over from the airport?

    Bette smiles and then nods.

    (Bette) Yes, do that

(Tina smiles) Really? It’d be very late

(Bette smiles) Really. I’ll leave a key out, just let yourself in

    (Tina smiles) OK

There is a loud knock on the door of Tina’s hotel room.

(Tina) Shit, sorry that’ll be Casey, I’m running late for my next meeting

    (Bette nods) OK

Tina answers distractedly as she packs her laptop into its case.

(Tina) Sorry baby, can I call you tonight?

Tina immediately holds the phone against her chest, shutting her eyes and cringing, and Bette smiles. After a moment Tina brings the phone back to her ear.

    (Tina) Sorry

    (Bette smiles) It’s fine

    Tina sighs.

(Tina) I’ll try and get that under control. It keeps just coming out

(Bette) Am I allowed to like it?

Tina raises her eyebrows and smiles.

    (Tina) Hmmm, I’m not sure

(Bette smiles) Well I do. You don’t have to stop saying it on my account, but it’s up to you

(Tina) You don’t think it blurs boundaries?

(Bette) I’ll leave it up to you Tee

Tina smiles. They stand in silence for a moment before there is another knock on the door.

    (Bette) I’ll let you go

    (Tina nods) OK

    (Bette) Call me tonight

Tina nods and stands still for a moment, and then smiles.

    (Tina) I will, bye baby

    Bette smiles.

    (Bette) Bye Tee

    1. Nothing like being apart to make lovers increase their desire to be with the other… Tina is giving in to her natural responses and calling Bette “baby” and “babe”. Bette has been calling her “T” for sometime now. This is the subconscious leaping out from time to time and reflecting what Tina actually thinks of Bette. Her desire to see Bette the moment she gets to LA and not wait another day is also indicative of the her desire to be with Bette.

Looks to me like the boundaries are really beginning to blurr. Just a matter of time to ditch the lines and rules altogether.

      Thanks for the chapter…
