She looks to Bette and shrugs.

(Tina) She’s just not you

They fall into silence, and Tina has a sip of wine and then looks back to her.

(Tina) So, to answer your question, I guess I am calling it off because of you

They hold each other’s gaze for a moment.

(Tina) Though with no expectation that anything will ever happen with you again

They share a sad look and then both have a sip of their drinks, again looking out over the water. Tina glances over and Bette looks to her, feeling Tina’s eyes on her.

(Bette) What?

Tina smiles and shrugs.

(Tina) I don’t know. There’s something comical about this. Sitting here drowning my sorrows with you

Bette looks at her for a moment.

(Bette) Is comical the right word?

Tina smiles and raises her eyebrows.

(Tina) Probably not

They smile sadly at each other, and Bette reaches over and takes her hand. Tina looks out over the water, and Bette watches her. She takes a breath before speaking.

(Bette) Tee, I think you need to find a way to move on from me

Tina raises her eyebrows and looks over at her, holding her gaze for a long moment.

(Tina) Well that must have been hard to say

Bette raises her eyebrows.

(Bette) You have no fucking idea

Tina gives a small laugh and looks at her affectionately, and Bette squeezes her hand.

(Tina sighs) I think you’re probably right, but regardless, I can’t marry Sarah. She deserves better than that. Maybe I’ll get there one day, but I’m clearly not there yet

(Bette) You could meet someone else

Bette looks to their hands and furrows her brow.

(Bette) Fall in love with someone else

Tina looks over at her and smiles.

(Tina) Give me another ten years, I might manage it

Bette looks over and smiles sadly at her.

(Tina) So you’ve given up then have you? Finally?

Bette sighs.

(Bette) Well, it’s more that I’ve come to accept that this present day version of me is a fucking idiot

Tina laughs and Bette smiles at her. They look at each other affectionately for a moment, and Tina then stands and steps across to Bette’s lounger, lying down alongside her and leaning her head against her chest as Bette wraps her arms around her tightly. They lie together, holding each other close. Bette speaks softly to her.

(Bette) Will you get cross again if I tell you that I love you?

Tina smiles as she tightens her hold around Bette’s waist.

(Tina) No

Tina lifts her chin and meets her eyes, and Bette takes a breath as she reaches towards her and moves the hair from Tina’s eyes.

(Bette) God I love you

Tina smiles sadly and closes her eyes, and Bette traces her fingertips down the side of Tina’s face as she takes her in.

(Bette) So much Tee

Tina opens her eyes and they hold each other’s gaze for a long moment. Tina takes a breath before speaking.

(Tina) I love you too

Bette closes her eyes tightly to stop her gathering tears, and Tina reaches up, holding her hand to the side of Bette’s face and running her thumb gently over her cheek. Bette opens her eyes and they both take a breath as they look back at each other. Tina then moves her hand through Bette’s hair, pulling her closer and bringing their lips together.

They draw back but remain close, resting their foreheads together. After a moment Bette pulls her closer still and they wrap their arms around each other, both burying their head into the other’s neck.
