Chapter 13 – Mary Moves In

The family would gather at Mary’s home every other Christmas and have a reunion. And the years they were not at Mary’s, the family gathered at Bette and Tina’s home in New York. Angie and Daniel spent at least two weeks every summer at Mary’s home in Arizona from the time Daniel entered grade school. Prior to that, Angie would her accompany her family for one week and then remain for another week or two as Bette, Tina and Daniel returned to New York. Mary would then accompany Angie home and stay for a few days and then fly to Los Angeles to visit with Paris and Kit. That was the routine up until this summer when Bette and Tina announced they were moving to Los Angeles.

Mary came and stayed with the family at the beach house in Redondo Beach for a week. She would have stayed longer, but life was changing in her circle of friends in the community near Phoenix Arizona. One friend was being pressured by her children to move closer to them or possibly live with one of them. The other friend had decided that she wanted to marry the guy she had been seeing for almost a decade and live with him. At the end of the summer, Mary spent three days with the Bette and Tina in the beach house and then accompanied the family to New York for five days and then to New Haven for two days to move Angie into her college dorm.

Bette and Tina had extended an invitation to Mary to move to Los Angeles and live with them until she decided what she wanted to do as far as living arrangements. It was about that time that they discovered that Mary’s ex-husband Melvin Porter had set up a trust for her benefit some 45 years ago and it had been accumulating earnings since its creation. The money had since been distributed and Mary found she had a nice nest egg of over 25 million dollars. At the age of 75 years old, she felt that finances would never be a problem, therefore giving away most of her furnishings in her home rather than moving them to Los Angeles was in her best interest. When she found her new home, she would acquire new furnishing which would suit her needs and desires. In the meantime, she would live with Tina and Bette and Daniel. And she would be close to Kit and Sonny, as well as Paris and Jeanette. After all these decades, she would be back with her family.
