    Chapter 15

    Tina laughs.

(Tina) Well she meets all your criteria then. How did you meet?

(Helena) Well, that is a bit of a downside actually. My mother introduced us

    Tina raises her eyebrows.

    (Tina) Oh God

    (Helena nods) I know

Tina sighs and places her hand on Helena’s shoulder.

(Tina) Well, you must really like her then, to give Peggy the satisfaction

    Helena smiles.

(Helena) I do. And you’ll like her. I want you to meet her

    (Tina) I’d love to, anytime

    (Helena) This weekend?

    Tina shrugs and smiles.

    (Tina) Sure

They arrive at the next stall and smile at each other as they step away and move towards different display tables. Helena glances over at her.

(Helena) Well let’s do dinner tomorrow night, with Bette as well I mean. I don’t think we’ve ever done that before. It’ll be fun

Tina doesn’t respond as she focuses on the table of pottery in front of her.

(Helena) Tina? Did you hear me? Dinner the four of us tomorrow night?

    Tina looks over at her.

(Tina) I don’t think that’s going to work

(Helena) OK. Has Bette got something on?

Tina frowns as she again focuses down on the table.

(Tina) I wouldn’t actually know, I haven’t spoken with her

Tina continues to avoid Helena’s eyes, and Helena frowns as she watches her.

    (Helena) Tina what’s going on?

Tina looks up at her and they hold each other’s gaze. Tina takes a breath before speaking.

(Tina) It always had an end date

Helena sighs and shakes her head slowly, and Tina frowns.

(Tina) Don’t look at me like that

    Helena shrugs.

    (Helena) I’m sorry, it’s frustrating

    Tina frowns.

(Tina) Well I’m sorry if you’re tired of it, but you must have seen this coming

Tina moves to the next stall and Helena sighs as she follows her. They look through some clothes racks in silence for a while, before Tina turns to her.

(Tina) You know me Helena. I just don’t want all those things that everyone else is so keen on – planning for a future together, promises, commitment

(Helena sighs) You’re right, I do know this of you, and I agree with you that you shouldn’t compromise yourself. Shouldn’t subject yourself to any situation that makes you unhappy

    1. So Tina decided in college before age 21, that she never wanted a relationship that involved future and commitment. She decided that she was going just to flit from one partner to another for the rest of her life? What she saying is that she never wants to depend on someone else. She never wants to share her life with someone else. She never wants anyone with whom she can truly be connected to and they be connected to her. What she really does not want is to love someone? She is now in her mid to late thirties? So she has decided that what she really wants is a life of isolation and solitude? When the right person comes along, then all of that mantra will go out the window. If you are with the wrong person, then it does feel stifling and confining. But with the right person it feels like a warm blanket – comforting, inviting, welcoming….. So Tina, the decision now is in your court. Are you happy with your decision to break it off with Bette? Are you really? Well, if you are this will be your life forever. You can go home and sit on your patio and think about what might have been. Or you can roll the dice and see what happens. Oh yes, and there is always an end date to every relationship…. for the good ones its called death… One more thing. Choosing to leave Bette IS a decision to follow your own plan for the future whether you acknowledge that or not. You are simply choosing for Bette not to be a part of it. You are choosing a future of being alone…. You see, there are no decision you can ever make which is not about the future.

Thanks for the chapter. Helena, you are now my hero… I hope this new woman is the one for you…
