Chapter 16 – Forget or remember

”When was the last time you felt lonely?”

”When Eddie was arrested. We didn’t talk much at that time, but I always felt free and fun with him.”

”Freedom and fun are the main reasons why you connected with him?”

”I don’t know. I felt that I belonged to a large company, and that I always had someone to spend my free time with. It calmed me down.”

”Now you do not communicate with that company?”

”We text infrequently, but this is not the same communication that was before. These are Eddie’s friends and he was the one who connected us.”

”Do you have a feeling that you have been robbed of the opportunity to feel not alone?”

”I had this feeling when mom and her lawyer sought a strict punishment for Eddie.”

    ”Did you resent your mom?”

”I felt like she was deliberately trying to take away the person I felt good with. And yet she didn’t have much contact with me. But you and I have already discussed this, now I’m not offended, I understand her actions.”

”I love you! I loooove you!” Bette and Oli were lying on the bed in the bedroom, Bette holding a stuffed rabbit in her hand and leaning it against baby’s stomach as if the toy was kissing her. Oli was laughing out loud and it was the most beautiful sound for Bette. Tina came into the room in a business suit, she had just arrived from work.

”Hi! How are you? What did you do today?” Tina came over and kissed Oli’s forehead, then Bette’s lips.

Bette was still smiling and playing with the rabbit as she answered her wife. ”We woke up, had a good meal, pulled sister’s pigtails to wake her up, yeah, baby?”  Bette said, looking at Oli and asking her. ”Then we went to the park, then Patrick came to us and brought documents from work, and baby-Oli thought it would be fun to smear them with zucchini puree.”

Tina changed in the dressing room and answered from there. “Oh, I understand her. Zucchini puree is only suitable for this.”

”No, it’s not true, zucchini puree is healthy!”  Bette said, as if speaking to Oli instead of Tina.

    Comments

    1. This is a really sad and tragic story. Bette, Tina and Angie have yet to reconcile their lives to the loss of Oli. They all must have therapy – individually and as a family. It appears that they have never really talked to one another about the loss of Oli and what it meant to them. If Oli is simply to be repressed into the past and not to be spoken about except on her birthday, then it is difficult to move on with their lives together. The fear of bringing up the deep sorrow will always be a burden and will cause a rift in their relationships with each other. It would appear, they have never shared the pain. It will never go away, but it can be diminished by sharing the hurt and the loss with each other.

This is another chapter which just bring me to tears…..

    2. Hmmm, still think why you need to bring this unexpecting turn about loss another child to them? I agree with some previous comments – there isn’t any indication of that in previous chapter and now it feels strange to me.
And second – why they together? They can’t grieve together, they can’t talk together about that – only with therapist. Even their daughter prefer talking not with them, but with therapist also. So, why they want to be together?

      • I hope that you will find answers to your questions in the following chapters. I love this couple endlessly and I want everything to be good for them, but I also want to try to delve into their characters through such a tregic theme. I understand that the transition to this topic was too abrupt and groundless, but this was my idea, which I will try to develop further.
