Love’s Recovery
“I don’t want to talk about you being a bad driver,” Bette kissed Tina’s head once again sitting on the edge of the bed. “I want to just relish in the fact that you and Angie are ok.”
“The car is totaled,” Tina admitted hesitantly.
“Cars can be replaced.”
“I’ll have to drive your car back and forth to work for a while.”
“You’ve gone too far,” Bette laughed as Tina rolled her eyes.
“But you let Maxine drive your car.”
“I would have sold my soul to the devil to get here as fast as I could.”
“I’m sorry I worried you,” Tina held Bette’s hand as she stroked the back of it calming Bette. “I really am ok.”
“And I really am going to fuss over you for days to come until you can’t stand the sight of me,” Bette countered. “When we get back home I’ll call Phyllis and take some time off and I can also call Aaron for you. You need some rest.”
“And while I am absolutely fine with going to work with a few small stitches in my head, I just may take you up on that offer so we can spend some quality time together with Angie. At least something good should come out of this besides me getting a better car out of the deal.”
Bette and Tina both looked up when someone knocked on the wall and entered the room explaining that he would be taking Tina for her CT scan. Bette listened carefully as the young man explained it would take about 30 minutes and he would bring her back up in the same room while the tests were being read.
Bette walked as far as she could with Tina and then reluctantly let go of her hand when she disappeared down the long hallway. She once again followed the signs to the ER waiting room in search of a good cup of coffee. When Bette got into the waiting room, she saw Maxine reading the same magazine unaware of Bette watching her.
Bette filled two cups with the complementary coffee and headed toward Maxine. She stood in front of her, a hand outstretched to offer Maxine one of the cups of coffee. Maxine looked up meeting Bette’s eyes and grabbed the cup, thankful that Bette sat down next to her.
“How’s Tina?”
“Fine,” Bette chuckled, “she must have really hit her head if she’s delusional to think I’ll let her drive my car.”
“The accident wasn’t her fault was it?”
“No, Tina is a good driver. We are going to be taking a few days off though to just rest once I get her home. I can honestly say I am surprised to see you still here.”
“I wasn’t going to leave you,” Maxine said carefully. “Angelica is in good hands with Alice…”
“Well that’s debatable,” Bette laughed for the first time in hours and it felt good.
“She loves that little girl very much. I wanted to make sure you were ok, you forbade me to see Tina and Angelica, but at least I could be here for you.”
“I appreciate that,” Bette held Maxine’s gaze for a few moments before breaking it to drink her coffee. “It’ll be a while before Tina is cleared to go home.”
“I have nothing but time,” Maxine said as she leaned back in the chair content to silently be supporting her daughter.

At last, Bette is allowing herself to relax with Maxine and just go with the flow. Too bad it takes a family emergency to get to accept the good will of others. She still needs to hear Maxine’s story. This was the first time that anyone had said Melvin had been abusive. I’m not sure Bette understands the extent of Melvin’s abuse. And once she hears it, will she accept that Melvin was not the man she thought he was?
I love the fact that Maxine called Alice when she knew Kit was not available. Maxine seems to be familiar with what goes on in an emergency room. And she seems to know how to clam Bette down. Good thing Tina is not hurt very bad.
Good chapter….great story line for this book. I hooked into this story and am anxiously waiting for the next chapter….
Great story Gumby!!!
Glad that Tina isn’t that bad injured and that Angelica wasn’t hurt at all.
Good to see Bette a little bit more relaxed with Maxine and that Maxine seems to respect the boundaries Bette set.
Looking forward to the next chapter!
So happy to be back in this story!
Loving the way Bette is opening up to listen to Maxine.
I think she will need a lot of support when she finds out the extent of Melvin’s abuse.
Thanks for posting, more please, can’t get enough of this story
