Chapter 30 – Saturday with the Extended Family
Alice: I know you were worried that Bette was going to insist that Angie have an arts career of some sort.
Tina: That was a foolish worry on my part. Yes, Angie was going to be exposed to the arts, but she was free to choose other areas of interest as well. And now she plans on being a lawyer.
Alice: If you asked me ten years ago if Bette would ever raise a child to be a lawyer? I would have said, you don’t know Bette Porter. Art is everything to her. The lawyer was who her dad was. No way, would she allow another one in the family.
Tina: Well, my dad was a lawyer too. And it looks like that is what Angie has her heart set on. And she never met either one of them. I have no idea how that happened.
Lynn: So, what you are saying is that Angie has chosen her career path without the influence of either of her parents.
Tina: Well, yes. We encouraged her to explore her options and do what would make her happy. I’m not sure how she ended up with the desire to be a lawyer. But I have a feeling that it has something to do with Ruth Bader Ginsburg. At the age of about 14, she had to do a paper on an American in government. She chose Justice Ginsburg. I think she fell in love with that woman and what she had done in her career and her influence on the court. I am really sorry she is no longer with us, for I am sure Angie would want to do an internship with her if given the opportunity.
Alice: And Bette had no objection?
Tina: None what so ever. She had already been through that with her father and was determined not to do that with her children. As long as the profession is legal and will provide an income, she has no problem with it. But she also must see some evidence that the chosen profession will result in some satisfaction in their work life before she will give her full throated endorsement. But we will support whatever path they decide on. It’s their life and they are the ones who will live it. And if the choice is not the right one, well it won’t be because we made it for them.
