Chapter 30 – Saturday with the Extended Family

Bette: We will be on that plane tomorrow evening. If Grandma is not well enough to make the trip, well, then we will call Aunt Paris and Aunt Jeanette to take care of her while we are in New York. Probability is that she got a little motion sickness looking at the waves. That happens to some people. If it was, she will be as good as new tomorrow.

Angie:  Oh… I’ve heard that can be terrible. But get away from the motion and people get over it.

Tina:  Sorry kids. We will make it up with Hamilton at the end of the week.

Daniel:  Well, as long as Grandmama Mary is going to be okay.

Bette:  I think she is going to be fine. So, what you guys say, we watch a movie? Angie, pick something out you want to see. Do you want some popcorn or something?

Angie:  No way.  I am still full from dinner.

Tina:  So, what do you guys want to watch?

Daniel:  Angie – you choose. This may be your last opportunity for a long time.

Angie:  How about something by Stephen King?  But something that is not gory. I know Shawshank Redemption… let’s watch that?

    Bette:  Have I seen that?

Tina:  Probably, but it’s been a number of years. Yes, Angie, I think that is a good choice. Is it in this library?

Angie:  No, I think I can get it on Netflix though. It’s in our New York Library.

Bette: Well, do what you need to do to get the movie you want. Anyone want a blanket?

Daniel sat in his usual lounge chair and Angie sat on the other. Bette and Tina sat close together on the sofa and shared a blanket. Under the covers they were holding hands and Tina was rubbing her thumb over her hand lightly.

Bette:  I really think Mary is okay… but we do need to keep an eye on her this week. If she exhibits any more problems, we will need to get her check out by a medical professional.

Tina:  Was she walking okay, doing her nightly routine as usual?

Bette:  Yes. She allowed me to help her with the removal of her boots, but she pretty much handled everything else just fine.

Tina: Well, we will know more in the morning.

They watched the movie which Daniel just loved. He was intrigued with the methods of communication and escape employed by Andy Dufresne. Angie was concerned about the injustice of false accusation and the fact that prisoners are not adequately prepared to rejoin society. Bette and Tina were enthralled by the friendship between Andy and Red and the other characters presented in the movie. After some discussion, the family decided to call it a night and retired to their rooms. They agreed to sleep a little later since there would be no nap. Bette instructed everyone to bring down their linens and laundry, particularly if they planned to take it to New York with them. Angie paid close attention to this as she knew that whatever she left would never get to New Haven without special arrangements.

Bette then hugged and kissed Daniel goodnight as Angie and Tina were telling each other good night.  Then Bette hugged Angie and told her goodnight and to get some sleep.

Bette and Tina headed for their room and decided to have a quick shower and then go to bed. Making sure they had their towels under their pillow, they both felt refreshed and ready for the night. Bette pulled Tina into her arms and Tina rested her head on Bette’s chest. This was usually Bette’s position on Tina, but in the last week or so, they had swapped places. Bette smiled as she played with Tina’s hair and kiss the top of her head. Tina was soon breathing in her rhythmic cadence which indicated that she was asleep. Bette thought a moment about how comfortable she was with her life – with her children, her extended family and most of all with her Tina. Bette too drifted off to sleep.
