    Chapter 4

“Then why are you lashing out at me?”

“This is a major decision Bette. I think we should have discussed it.”

“We absolutely discussed it Tina; right in the beginning. We said we wanted children that reflected both our heritages so they would be more like our children. What heritage did you think we were talking about?”

    “I’m sorry. I just wasn’t prepared.”

“I don’t understand. Other than being committed to spending the rest of your life with me; what more do you need to do to prepare?”

Bette is hurt beyond belief. Tears she can no longer contain in her expressive chocolate brown eyes trickle down and glisten against the beautiful mocha complexion that combined the contrasting hues of her interracial parentage.

    “Look at me Bette.”

Bette looks at Tina’s pale white skin that reddens in the sun, her light hazel green eyes and straight blonde hair, but all she sees is the beautiful woman that she loves. When she looks into those eyes she can see their unborn children.

“I don’t feel qualified to be the mother of a child who is part African American. I don’t know what it means to be Black.”

“I think I can make a contribution in that department.”

“And don’t you think on top of everything else to also have two moms? That is a lot of otherness to put on one child Bette.”

Bette’s hurt is so apparent that it didn’t take Tina long to realize that her reaction however honest might have come across as a rejection of Bette’s identity; not only her heritage but her sexuality as well. Bette wasn’t naïve. She knew racism and judgments against same sex unions was still prevalent in society but she couldn’t and wouldn’t let that stop her from living her life happily and having her dream. She wanted children and she thought Tina wanted the same thing. Bette always felt that no matter what they faced, she and Tina could overcome any obstacles as long as they did it together. Discrimination in any form never existed in their relationship and Bette never thought it was an issue between them; but what Tina was suggesting sounded very much like her partner was perpetuating colorism on their unborn children. When Tina looked at Bette did she see her as different or inferior? Did she expect their children would inherently be accorded different social treatment or economic status based on their skin color and parentage?

    1. Wow, now things get worst, there is a man in the scene, who Tina doesn’t even know in flesh. I could think on the traumatic year they had, has affected Tina in the way that she is rejecting many things she had with Bette; deep down she knows she love her wife, but she feels manipulated by her, and Bette wants to get things done and behaves as a control freak. Again miscommunication and self-centeredness is the problem. I like how you take them down in this story, I wondering when they will touch bottom and how is going to be the mending fences part. Now, Tina has made a mistake, apparently she left the laptop on, and got distracted with Alice; if Bette arrives first, she may see the e-mails on the laptop and it’s not going to be pretty for Tina. I like this story, and as painful as it is I’m glad you are updating every day, so, the agony is short. Thanks again and pps

    2. It’s great to have you back posting BAT even though you are breaking my heart with the storyline.

I will, of course, keep reading in the believe that Tibette will triumph in the end.

      Thanks and post again soon.
