Chapter 62 – Utter and Total Desperation

“Well, I’ll let you two discuss business. Bette,” Jodi said as she took Bette’s hand in both of her own, shaking it slowly. “Always a pleasure. I’m sure we’ll be in touch.” She winked at the ad executive before showing herself out.

Once she was gone, Zack offered Bette a chair.

She couldn’t help herself, she had to pry.

“Old girlfriend of yours?” she teasingly inquired of the hipster.

“Far from it actually.” Zack replied with a roll of his eyes. “Let’s just say Lerner’s the boss around here. Or at least that’s what she believes.”

“Aah,” Bette said with understanding. “I see.”

“Besides, she seems to be into you.” Zack smiled at the gorgeous woman sitting on the other side of the desk from him. “Plus, I have the wrong anatomy for her to see me as anything but her professional door mat.”

    Bette couldn’t help but laugh.

“Yes, she’s quite persistent. I think it’s a challenge that I have a girlfriend and haven’t responded in kind to her blatant flirting.”

It was Zack’s turn to laugh.

“I like you already, Bette. Okay, so Kit Porter and the Stouts.”

Once Bette agreed to the terms of ticket sale distribution, merchandising rules, and the performance contract was signed, the band manager was ready to go.

She thanked Zack for his time and shook his hand before exiting the building.

As she disengaged her alarm, Bette noticed Jodi step out of the green Astin Martin and smile at her.

“Hey. Have you been out here the whole time?” Bette asked with a furrowed brow.

“Yep. I wanted to talk to you. Can you spare a few minutes for me?” The agent asked with a hopeful tone.

Shit, Bette thought. Should I tell her to call Joyce? Fuck, what do I do?

As Bette struggled internally, Jodi took advantage of the silence.

“I just wanted to let you know that In-Tune’s lawyers are revising the contract and that a new one will be faxed to Joyce by the end of the week.”

    Bette nodded. “Okay. Great.”

“But I also wanted to tell you that I’ve spoken with A&R at Thrill City Records and they’re willing to offer a really sweet deal for the Stouts.”

    1. I second all the dislikes of Jody. Good thing that you portray her anything but sympathic.

Bette showed lots of professionalism by keeping her emotions in check and confront Jody quite calm but to the point. Nevertheless I guess that Jody’s comment on Tina and the contract was enough to sow the seeds of doubt in Bette.

      Thanks for the chapter!
