    Chapter 9

    (Tina) That’s quite a lot of effort to go to, with no guarantee that I’d be here

    Bette holds her gaze.

    (Tina) You really don’t like losing, do you?

    They smile at each other, and Bette takes a seat.

    A member of the wait staff arrives and places a wine glass in front of Bette, topping up both of their glasses before stepping away. Bette then picks up her glass and points it towards Tina.

    (Bette) You owe me a lot of money

    Tina smiles and has a sip of wine.

    (Tina) It wasn’t a lot of money. We both know I could have taken far more than I did

    She leans her head to one side and examines Bette for a moment.

    (Tina) Did you really come all the way here to get it back?

    (Bette) Well, it wasn’t just money. Some of what you took was sentimental to me

    (Tina) I hoped as much

    They hold each other’s gaze for a moment, and then both smile.

    Bette has a sip of wine and glances around the room.

    (Bette) So is this your game then? You prey on unsuspecting women here year after year?

    Tina looks at her for a moment before responding.

    (Tina) No, that’s not my game. This was a step outside of the usual for me

    (Bette) But you’re a professional, aren’t you?

    Tina holds her gaze.

    (Bette) You had no issue with the safe, or in accessing my accounts. And you cover your tracks expertly

    She picks up her wine and tips the glass towards Tina.

    (Bette) You’re a thief

    Tina looks at her for a moment and then smiles.

    (Tina) Yes, I’m a thief. Same as you

    They smile at each other and both have a sip of wine. Tina glances around the room and then focuses back on Bette.

    (Tina) So what’s the plan here? You’ve found me. Congratulations I guess

    They hold each other’s gaze.

    (Tina) What do you suggest we do now?

    Bette plays with her wine stem before responding.

    (Bette) Well, it’s Monday. I know a bar and restaurant in Mesaria with fantastic local music

    Tina looks at her for a moment, examining her.

    (Tina) You want to have dinner with me?

    2. Tina came on the anniversary of their meeting last year. Yes, she wants to meet with Bette again…. but Bette still does not know her name.

      Strange… that Tina is a thief as well. And how she is worked out the entire action within just an hour. Damn good… and of course Bette cannot report to the authorities since the money has been illegally obtained. And how would she describe Tina? No name… no information as to where she lives or does for a living… Maybe a picture on her cell phone? Not much help at all.

      Oh, and I believe that Bette was not looking to rob Tina. But we will see?
