Chapter I – Yes, I’m Ready
“… so I think you should bring that bear spray with you if you both decide to run tomorrow morning, then, Bette,” Tina was saying.
“Good idea, T,” Bette answered, still lost in her thoughts. The blonde nodded, about to mention something else but paused when she saw that Bette was distracted. “Honey?” she asked quietly. “Bette?” more sharply when the brunette didn’t immediately respond.
“Umm… yeah, T?” Bette snapped her head around, and gave her partner a smile, eyes focused on Tina now.
Tina mouthed, “Where were you?”
“Stuff … our wedding … just thinking about something,” Bette mouth back.
Tina shook her head slightly from side to side, pursing her lips but her hazel eyes were glinting with humor.
Jade remained quiet during this quick exchange, eyes lowered. For someone who was shy around people, surprisingly, she didn’t stoop or slouch; rather, she kept her back erect, broad shoulders square and straight, and her body radiated a sinewy strength and athleticism. But her eyes tended to be downcast when she was nervous. Last night, Tina noticed that when she moved and walked, she moved fluidly, gracefully, gliding about on the balls of her feet, like an athlete who was also a dancer. She was someone who compelled attention, but given her shyness, she didn’t seem the type to notice the attention she drew. She was definitely tough to figure out.
“Jade, what are your plans today?” Tina asked softly.
The gentle approach seemed to work better.
Jade looked up and smiled quickly, “Umm … I thought Ali was going to meet me out here, actually. And then she said we may head into town and get some stuff for the bachelorette party later. We’re supposed to spend the day together, basically.”
Bette and Tina nodded.
“So we’ll see you later, then? Do you want to go to the party together?” Tina asked. She paused as she saw in the distance a figure resembling William’s walk out to the main terrace of the lodge. After a quick glance at Bette, Tina cocked her head towards the terrace, where William was leaning against the wooden railing that span the perimeter of the terrace, contemplating the expansive views of the Grand Tetons as he sipped his coffee. She started to ask, “Bette, if you don’t mind, I’d like to go see William …”

Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .
As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
