    After a spell of an easy sense of quiet between them, unexpectedly, Jade broke the silence. “You and Tina fit so well together,” the shy twenty-year old observed, talking softly. “Erm…was it always like that, ever since you got together?” With a small smile, Bette slowly let go of the camera and let it hang

    After a spell of an easy sense of quiet between them, unexpectedly, Jade broke the silence. “You and Tina fit so well together,” the shy twenty-year old observed, talking softly. “Erm…was it always like that, ever since you got together?”

    With a small smile, Bette slowly let go of the camera and let it hang from her neck as she looked at their young friend. “Umm… sorry to ask such a personal question,” Jade added quickly, cheeks aflame as she shifted her glance downward and scuffed her toes on a nearby rock when Bette remained quiet at first.

    “No … no.., please, I don’t mind, really,” Bette answered quickly, and then reached out to rub Jade’s shoulders affectionately. “I’m glad that you feel comfortable enough with me to ask, so…”

    “Really?” thick lashes that hid those emerald green eyes flew up. Jade searched the brunette’s large brown eyes uncertainly.

    “Yeah, yeah,” Bette said with a smile and in her most reassuring voice. “And, to answer your question, no, or … well, come to think of it, at some level, yes.”

    “What?” Jade knit her brows together, confused.

    Bette sighed and dropped her arms, before casually crossing them in front of her chest. “How do I explain this?”

    Jade waited.

    “When Tina and I met, there was an almost chemical connection that linked us instantaneously. I’d never felt anything like it before, and, well, she … how do people put it? She rocked my world. But Tina was with someone else at that time, and, um … I’d been in the midst of …”

    “Bette, you don’t have to …”

    Bette shook Jade off with a smile, “As I was saying, I’d been at the tail-end of getting over a serious relationship myself, and … um… had been dealing with other things. Anyway, I wasn’t trusting my feelings or reactions to her, at first. Plus, Tina was clearly straight, so …”

    Jade raised her eyebrows.

    Bette smiled and chuckled, “Yeah. Had a boyfriend and everything … I’m sure you’ve met and, um.. turned many a straight girl, yourself, right?”

    She nudged Jade’s ribs playfully with a forearm, and was met with flaming red cheeks and panicked green eyes.

    “You don’t need to answer that,” the brunette winked, and then continued. “But because of several things that happened, and other stuff we didn’t expect, Tina and I had to spend a lot of time together right after we met. You can expect that it was a crazy time. I was keen on keeping things cool between us, because we needed to give each other space to deal with this insane chemistry, but there was no denying the sparks flying around when we were together, so…”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
