Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
“The whole picture probably doesn’t square with your memories of her, or your memories of your family life,” Bette continued, as Christopher looked away from her and Tina and gazed at the bustling street scene outside the window. “From everything we’ve pieced together, you and Kim were raised by loving moms, and Georgina continued to stay involved in your lives even after Callie passed and you both grew into full-blown adults, right?”
Christopher nodded, still not looking at her, but surreptitiously wiped a tear from his eye. Georgina’s last visit with him sprang to mind, as he remembered he’d told her about planning to volunteer in a charity rendering assistance in the health crisis in Africa. She’d looked at him with love and pride even as she’d fussed about wanting him to take extra precautions about his health while out in the field. He and Kim and their moms’ close friends had been thunderstruck by the accusations against Georgina, and he’d been walking around in a haze, it felt like, ever since being told about everything she was supposed to have been responsible for.
“I think she was everything you thought she was, before all of this came out in the open, Christopher,” Bette said gently. “And I wanted to tell you that face-to-face – to encourage you to think of her well, again. I can’t explain how I know, but she just didn’t strike me as being the monster investigators are saying she is.”
Christopher looked away from the window, bent his head, and began to sob into his hands.
Bette continued, tearing up also, “I feel in my gut that whatever happened out in that boat, when she and Andrew Green took a ride out and headed straight for that storm, and were swallowed up by it: she did so, probably, to keep us safe.”
“And I don’t think she would have taken that risk just for me, Christopher. I think she did that for you and your sister. And because of that, I’ll keep trying to find out how and why what happened in that boat happened, not just to satisfy our curiosity, but to help you and your sister come to some closure about everything, ok?”
Tina took hold of Bette’s hand and kissed it. They shared a look and then together looked again with concern at Christopher’s bent, sobbing figure.

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
