Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

Brom had also found a way to get more out of Andrew Green’s assistant.  She was the source of the so-called evidence against Cam, the one who’d brought to investigators sound files of conversations supposedly between Cam and the core group of the gold collective.  In exchange for immunity against prosecution against her, she said that Andrew Green had ordered her to carry out the taping of these conversations, and had also assembled files of money transfers from a few members of the collective to Cam.

But the core group had been protesting vociferously that all of the evidence had been fabricated.  They claimed that none of them knew Cam, didn’t know that she’d planned the attack on Peter’s estate, and that they hadn’t ordered it.  Jackson hadn’t revealed to Bette what he knew about Cam’s role in what had happened in Skydance, but Bette guessed that Cam was probably the one who’d taken out the sniper who’d shot at the estate.  Cam couldn’t have been the one who’d planned the attack on the estate, notwithstanding the so-called information in the files that Andrew Green’s assistant produced.

Meanwhile, while the rest of Andrew Green’s staff had suddenly disappeared upon his demise, Dave had managed to track down a couple of the men who’d been known to have been his main security detail.  While pretending to be interested in recruiting them for Brom’s security firm, he got them to tell him more about the jobs they’d done for Andrew Green, particularly things related to Cam Miller.  One of them let slip his plan to eventually find Tina, just to satisfy his curiosity about what Tina could have known about what Cam had been up to when she’d first tangled with them and Andrew Green, all those years ago in London.

With that, to take them out of the picture, Brom and Dave maneuvered to drop some incriminating information about them anonymously to the investigative team, making it sound like the information had come out of London, concerning their criminal activities there.  They’d only told Bette about this part after the men had been picked up and sent to UK authorities, so that authorities there could deal with them.

Bette herself had been interviewed by investigators, because she’d originally been interviewed following the attack in Peter’s estate, and the leader of the new investigative team that was looking into the boating accident had wanted to alert her that she could have potentially been a target of Cam, based on the files disclosed to them by Andrew Green’s assistant. “Too many coincidences, Bette.   I promise we’ll keep you updated in case we find more information about whether you are still in danger.”

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
