Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
“We don’t have any evidence about whether or not Andrew Green was involved, Christopher …” Bette said slowly.
“But everything you’ve said so far seems to indicate that Georgina … or Cam, as she was known to you … knew something. Or could have known something, but didn’t get to tell you?” Christopher cut in.
“That seems to be the case, yes,” Bette responded. “But all of this, what we’ve just shared with you … um … they’re really just conjecture, Christopher. We don’t have any real evidence…”
Christopher nodded his head, and then gave her a small smile. “Look, Bette, I realize that you’ve taken a lot of risk telling me all of this. And I can see that you’re carefully choosing your words … maybe to protect me from something?”
Bette said nothing but looked at him over the rim of her coffee cup, her large brown eyes holding the same warm, steady look she’d given him when she’d approached him in the bench earlier.
As she set her coffee cup down, she said quietly, “I think Cam will be exonerated of all of these allegations, eventually, Christopher. The defense teams of the people that had supposedly hired her are too good. They will find something in all of the evidence that’s been gathered. And, as a result, I think that in the process, things about Andrew Green will surface. I can’t come out and say all of this because investigators say I was a target, and there are parts to this that, for many good reasons, I can’t get into. The question later could be if I was a target of Andrew Green’s also. So, on my part, I’ll just have to see how that all plays out later.”
Before he could say anything, she continued, “But you’re right. I took a lot of risk approaching you like this. And I have a good reason to … because, well, Tina and I are moms, as were Georgina and Callie … and I can only imagine how devastating all of this has been for you and your sister. Finding out who Georgina was … what she’d been doing the whole time she was helping to raise you. And, to top it all off, being thought of as responsible for killing some very wealthy people – which you may worry could have long-lasting impacts on your lives.”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
