    Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4

”Discussion to commence Saturday evening,” Tina replied. ”Perhaps we could don some sensible shoes and walk to dinner?”

”Sensible shoes?” Bette scoffed. ”You jest.”

”Okay, even I thought that might be too much for you,” Tina laughed. ”And once again, jeans are fine. But this time the destination is a mystery to you.”

”Tina?” Bette started. ”There’s something I wanted to say…about the other night.”

    ”What’s that?”

”I wanted to kiss you goodnight, but you seemed so sad after we talked about Nicole that I just couldn’t.”

    ”I’m sorry,” Tina replied.

”Oh God, no I didn’t want you to apologize,” Bette stumbled. ”I…I can’t second guess what you’re thinking. I’m accustomed to doing what I want.”

”And you should do what you want.”

”I will,” Bette promised. ”But like you said, this is new territory. For both of us.”

”I’m still finding my way,” Tina said. ”Recovery from such a loss is a process, not an event.”

”We’re both intelligent people, well-trained in the art of communication,” Bette said. ”I’ll take care of my needs and you can take care of yours.”

”I’ve been on my own for a year and a half; I’ve gotten good at taking care of my own needs,” Tina replied off-handedly.

The implication of what she had just said occurred to Tina almost immediately.

”That is so not what I meant…” Tina said.

Bette was smiling broadly at the other end of the line, partly at how flustered Tina was and partly at the image her comment brought to mind.

”Tina, it’s okay, I didn’t take it that way until you tried to explain yourself,” Bette assured her. ”But it did take the edge off of what was turning into a serious talk.”

”I should quit while I’m behind. I have a lot of work to do anyway,” Tina said. ”I’ll see you Saturday?”

”See you then,” Bette said. Her smile persisted.

Bette hung up the phone, but let her hand rest on the receiver for a few moments. Tina was turning out to be much more than just a formidable adversary.

    Chapter 4

”I’m glad you are finally getting out there,” Alice said. ”Listen, I miss Nicole too. But you’re still here and you deserve to be happy.”

    ”You’re not upset?” Tina asked.

    1. Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.

      • The first chapter is close to the same as the first chapter of Amicus Curiae, but it diverges quite wildly from there. Completely different story, though the setting is the same. Thanks for reading!

    2. Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.

As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.

Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!

      • Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.

    3. A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.

I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.

    4. Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
