    Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4

”I can’t yet. I can’t be the one who initiates something like that. I’m not there.”

”Perhaps she sensed that you’re not there,” Marie suggested. ”Sounds as though she’s being quite respectful of your special circumstance. Especially given that you had just referenced it earlier in the evening.”

”I can’t help but feel as though I’d be cheating on Nicole,” Tina replied. ”Even though I know she’s gone.”

”If the situation was reversed, would you want Nicole to continue mourning?

”Of course not. After a respectable time frame, I would want her to move on. To be happy again.”

”Do you think it’s been a respectable length of time?”

”I think so. I don’t know. The situation presented itself. And Bette…well, it’s hard to deny. She’s captivating.”

”What would Nicole say to you about dating again?” Marie asked.

”She’d say not to date someone who wasn’t worthy of me,” Tina replied immediately.

”Sounds like this is a conversation you two might have had,” Marie offered gently.

”We did,” Tina replied, smiling at the recollection.

Marie let Tina ponder her thoughts for a few moments.

”She would want me to get back to living a real life,” Tina said. ”Instead of going through the paces.”

”I think that’s a reasonable conclusion,” Marie replied. ”What do you suppose you’ll do next?”

”I’ll call Bette this afternoon and confirm our plans for Saturday night,” Tina stated confidently.

Their session lasted several more minutes, but a significant hurdle had already been cleared. Tina had given herself the permission she needed to move on.

”Bette, Tina Kennard called,” Bette’s assistant waved a pink message slip at her as she approached her office door. ”She said she’ll be in her office until five.”

”Thanks, Jackie,” Bette plucked the paper from her fingertips as she passed by.

”I thought that case was over?”

”Maybe there’s a detail we need to talk about,” Bette shrugged. Her personal life was already fodder for the office rumour mill. She didn’t need people speculating about whether or not she was dating someone from the D.A.’s office.

Besides, if she didn’t know Tina was gay, it was unlikely anyone else did. They would have much more latitude to interact as colleagues without the assumption that they were involved.

    1. Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.

      • The first chapter is close to the same as the first chapter of Amicus Curiae, but it diverges quite wildly from there. Completely different story, though the setting is the same. Thanks for reading!

    2. Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.

As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.

Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!

      • Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.

    3. A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.

I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.

    4. Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
