Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4
Bette shook off the thought. They’d had one date. And it had turned into more of a meeting between acquaintances. She wondered whether Tina was ready for anything more, or if she was dipping her toe into the dating pool with someone she thought would be more of a fling than anything else. That was the reputation Bette had. Not by her design – but no one had ever interested her beyond a short term relationship.
Bette slid her chair up to her desk and dialled the phone.
”Tina Kennard,” came the answer.
”You answer your own phone? Times are tough in the public service.”
”I left my direct line smart ass,” Tina replied. ”People like to gossip around here too, you know.”
”Of course,” Bette found herself intrigued at Tina’s coarseness. She was always so staid and professional when they interacted in court. ”My ass will take the compliment, Dr. Ph.D. from Oxford.”
”I’m sure you get a lot of compliments in that direction,” Tina said. She squeezed her eyes shut, hardly able to comprehend that she’d said that. She rushed to a new topic of conversation. ”I was calling to confirm our Saturday plans.”
”I’m already looking forward to it,” Bette replied.
”Pick you up at seven?” Tina asked.
”Perfect.”
”I’ll need you to text me your address,” Tina said.
”Consider it done,” Bette replied. ”Did you get any feedback on the settlement we reached?”
”Everyone was pleased he ended up doing some jail time,” Tina replied. ”Considering who was defending him.”
”You’re too kind, I’m sure.”
Tina’s cell phone indicated an incoming text message. She glanced at the screen.
”You live three blocks from me,” Tina said.
”Convenient, isn’t it?” Bette said.
”I’m surprised we haven’t run into each other,” Tina said.
”I’m not much for walking the neighborhood,” Bette said. ”Classic Angelino. Always in my car.”
”It’s one of the things I don’t like about Los Angeles,” Tina replied. ”The need to spend so much time in a vehicle.”
”I can be swayed by a persuasive oral argument,” Bette said. ”And I’m sure you’re just the person to offer a point by point analysis of your position on the matter.”
Tina wasn’t sure if Bette was flirting or if her inference of Bette’s comments was rooted in the duration of her celibacy.

Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.
P
The first chapter is close to the same as the first chapter of Amicus Curiae, but it diverges quite wildly from there. Completely different story, though the setting is the same. Thanks for reading!
Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.
As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.
Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!
Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.
This story is definitely familiar. So happy to see it back. Great writing love the story line.
A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.
I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.
Loved it. So glad you posted it again. Thanks
Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
I love your stories! I remember this one. Look forward to reading it.
Updating this story.
A beautiful story.
Whole universe.
