    Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4

”Sounded like you were interested in coming up against me a few minutes ago,” Bette countered.

Tina’s eyes widened and she was left uncharacteristically silent at the retort.

Bette could hardly believe she said it herself, and felt Tina’s silence presented as good an opportunity as any to make her exit. She couldn’t help but have a grudging respect for someone who was so willing to put everything on the line for every case.

Tina Kennard was a formidable adversary. Bette looked forward to putting another notch in her win column after proving her case. The guilt or innocence of her client notwithstanding, she had a job to do. And Tina was merely an inconvenience that she had to manage along the way to doing it.

”She infuriates me!” Tina replied into the phone. ”She’s arrogant, completely without a moral compass, and has scant respect for the law itself!”

”But she’s hot,” Alice sighed. ”She gets away with so much because everyone’s so distracted by her charm.”

”She knows how far she can push each and every judge,” Tina sighed. ”You’re lucky you’re not a lawyer. Sometimes it’s so not about the law.”

”Sounds like you were the one pushing the envelope today,” Alice said. ”You made a thinly veiled sexual retort in front of a judge?”

”I don’t know what I was thinking,” Tina shook her head. ”The worst part is, Bette totally called me on it.”

”I thought that was the best part,” Alice said. ”If you’re going to debate with the likes of her, you’re going to have to get yourself a better script.”

”Are you suggesting I can’t beat her?”

”I’m suggesting you get some real duds for cases when she happens to be your opponent,” Alice said. ”It’s not a judgement on you; it’s the decision making process your office follows in selecting worthy cases.”

”You think I should try to cut a deal.”

”Dude’s guilty as sin,” Alice said. ”Offer a modest sentence on a grade I felony. She has to take any offer to him.”

”That means I have to call her tonight,” Tina said.

”I can’t believe it – she rattles you,” Alice grinned at the realization. ”Tina and Be-ette sittin’ in a tree…k-i-s-s-i-n-g.”

    ”Fuck off Alice.”

    1. Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.

      • The first chapter is close to the same as the first chapter of Amicus Curiae, but it diverges quite wildly from there. Completely different story, though the setting is the same. Thanks for reading!

    2. Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.

As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.

Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!

      • Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.

    3. A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.

I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.

    4. Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
