Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4
”My client feels this is a fair and equitable solution, given the misunderstanding that brought him in front of the court,” Bette replied.
”This ‘misunderstanding’ means he’ll be pleading guilty,” the judge continued. ”He won’t be standing in the corner for his sentence.”
”Of course your honor,” Bette said. ”I mis-spoke. He is perfectly aware of the consequences of pleading guilty as per the agreement presented to you this morning.”
They completed the final details of the plea agreement before the judge discharged the jury and the accused was taken into custody to start his sentence.
”A moment in chambers, counsellors?” the judge said as she stood. ”It won’t take long.”
Tina and Bette nodded to the judge and left their paperwork behind for their respective co-counsel to gather. They took seats, at the judge’s invitation, across from where she sat down.
”I have to say, I was surprised to hear you two had reached a settlement after the fiasco of yesterday afternoon,” the judge said. ”I’d like to think the threat of a contempt charge helped bring you to your senses, but I’m not so vacant as to think being chastised by the likes of me swayed you in the least.”
”I apologize for my behaviour your honour,” Tina said. ”I assure you, it’s a rare event for me to lose my temper.”
”Indeed, it is rare,” Judge Robinson noted, before turning to Bette. ”Ms. Porter, I get the impression you’re a bit too smug at this conversation.”
”Not at all, your honour,” Bette said. ”Astute observation, that emotions were running high between us yesterday. It was appropriate for you to get us in line again. I too apologize that we necessitated such action on your part.”
”Don’t let it happen again.”
They offered some final words of assurance that future interventions would not be necessary before making their way back to the court room.
”Does it seem as though we just got threatened with detention?” Bette asked as they entered the empty room.
”Kind of has that feel to it,” Tina agreed. She walked to retrieve her rain coat and umbrella. All pertinent documents, as well as her briefcase, were in the possession of her co-counsel.
”I could have won this case,” Bette said, slipping on her coat.

Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.
P
The first chapter is close to the same as the first chapter of Amicus Curiae, but it diverges quite wildly from there. Completely different story, though the setting is the same. Thanks for reading!
Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.
As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.
Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!
Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.
This story is definitely familiar. So happy to see it back. Great writing love the story line.
A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.
I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.
Loved it. So glad you posted it again. Thanks
Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
I love your stories! I remember this one. Look forward to reading it.
Updating this story.
A beautiful story.
Whole universe.
