    Held in Contempt Chapters 1-4

”It was much more cordial than any time we’ve met in court.”

”You always got my heart rate up when we met in court too,” Bette said.

”See, I knew you’d return to flirting eventually,” Tina said. ”Just took a moment to get back on track.”

They fell into casual conversation while they enjoyed their tea, and each other’s company.

”I should get going,” Bette finally accepted the lateness of the hour.

”Just when we were making modest progress…”

”I’d like to see you again,” Bette said. ”Outside of work.”

”Next dinner is on me,” Tina said. ”Any availability on the weekend?”

    ”I’m free Saturday.”

”I’ll call you with details,” Tina said.

They walked to the front door, and Bette retrieved her coat from the wall hook.

”What’s the protocol here?” Bette asked, shaking her head. ”Can we hug again?”

”Bette Porter at a loss for what to do,” Tina reached to smooth an imaginary crease from the lapel of Bette’s coat. ”I’m sure that doesn’t happen very often.”

”I’m on unfamiliar ground,” Bette responded.

”It’s all pretty new to me too,” Tina said. ”It’s been a while since I was out on a date.”

Bette reached with both arms and did what she suggested she would do, offering only a warm embrace before backing away.

Given what had become the topic of conversation that evening, anything more would have been too much. For both of them.

Once she left, Tina turned the outside light on until Bette was behind the wheel of her car. With one last wave good-bye, Tina turned off the light and leaned against the front door.

Tina was dating again. Rather than being pleased with herself, she couldn’t help but cry at the loss she still felt.

    Chapter 3

”I wanted Bette to kiss me, but all she did was offer another hug at the end of the evening,” Tina sighed.

Tina was in her therapist’s office on the fourth floor of a downtown building. Far enough from work to be discreet, but close enough so as to be convenient for mid-day appointments.

”Why didn’t you kiss her goodnight if that’s what you wanted?”

Tina had been seeing Dr. Marie Hanson for well over a year. Her visits had become less frequent, but no less important to her mental health after having suffered through the sudden passing of her long-term partner.

    1. Hi jks:
This is an excellent story, it is amazing, very well written, the plot is quite attractive and it hooks me up very easily, I haven’t read that story before, and even though you may post it with a different name, thank you so much for this gift.

      • The first chapter is close to the same as the first chapter of Amicus Curiae, but it diverges quite wildly from there. Completely different story, though the setting is the same. Thanks for reading!

    2. Well, as I’ve said before, I love reading your stories and this is one is no exception.

As a retired lawyer (UK) I love the setting and the dialogue.

Thanks for posting. Keep those chapters coming and I’ll keep reading!

      • Hopefully I don’t make it too unbelievable for someone who actually has training as a lawyer! I do not, I only have my imagination, and sometimes it takes me to places for plot purposes that stretch what could possibly happen in the real world. Thanks for letting me know you’re out there reading.

    3. A story that i defiantly recognize, but i still don’t know what your aliases are. But i think the site has just give me a clue, but to be sure i am gonna check it first.

I am happy that you have decided to post this story. Thank you for it.

    4. Great as usual. It does start off similarly to “Amicus Curiae” but then becomes quite unique. You still have that stellar gift of dialogue, snakiness and humor. Am anxious/excited for more.
