Chosen Family
“Thank you dear. You are such a treasure and a blessing to me.”
“Ah. You are the treasure and more than a blessing to so many.”
Peggy hugs Bette close and feels comforted by her words. They are soon ready to get up and continue the walk and conversation.
“So, when are you planning this move to Los Angeles?”
“It’s already in the works. My lawyers and financial people are working out the details. I just have one more thing to do, and that’s to find a Director to run the foundation.”
“I thought you would be running things?”
“No dear. I really do want to retire at least partially for now, then gradually into full retirement within the next couple of years. I’ll keep my hands in it, but I need someone that I can trust implicitly to take the helm.”
Peggy stopped again and looked Bette in the eye. “That’s really what I wanted to talk to you about…Bette darling, I’d like to offer you the Directorship. I can’t think of anyone else more suited. You and I share a passion for art that is unmatched. You’re brilliant when it comes to recognizing new and innovative expressions of art that really challenge the senses. I know with you in charge we can fulfill our mission to award grants to community-based projects and organizations that support and promote all forms of art expression. I want the Peabody Arts Foundation to be known for supporting unique, enriching art experiences. After seeing the work, you did at the CAC and the artists you showcased in your own galleries, and even in your most recent position as the Dean at CU. I can’t think of anyone more qualified to move the foundation into the future that I envision.”
“Peggy I’m honored that you think so highly of me. I’m almost speechless, but I’m just now embarking on a whole new life. The Bette Porter Gallery has only opened its door in the last few months. We’ve barely gotten started. Leigh’s show is our first big artist’s showcase and that hasn’t even happened yet.”
“Bette, I realize all that, and I’m willing to give you all the time you need to get the gallery going, but from what I can see you’ve already hit the ground running. I met Kristen earlier today and she is a gem. She so reminded me of you at that age. She’s got what it takes to make your gallery very successful, and you’ve already told me that you wanted her to run the day to day operations. You want to be free to seek out new talent, and what better way than as the Director of the Foundation? They will be coming to you. You will have exposure to so much more than you could ever do on your own. Listen, I know this is a bit overwhelming to think about right now. Why don’t we get together tomorrow? I’ll show you the business plans and we’ll look at some of the submissions that are currently pending. I have Bio’s on everyone we are considering for the board of directors, as well as staff. Once you see the scope of this endeavor, I think you’ll find that it fits very well into what you’re seeking to do.”

Wow….what a surprise. Peggy moving to LA and putting Bette into position that Helena once occupied? I think I would want to know more about what is going on with Helena. She has a strong vengeful streak and she will take action, How is she living at the moment? Her father’s inheritance? Can she cause Bette and Tina future trouble?
How is Tina going to respond to this new offer Peggy is making? How is this going to impact the family really in time and being away from the family. Of course it will mean an extra paycheck….
This is most intriguing. Have they now moved into the beach house? Or is this spring break or something?
Love Peggy….she is one of a kind. I love that she is so close to Bette. It looks like Helena deepest fear has become a reality. Bette has become the daughter and Helena is the outcast.
Love this story……can’t wait for more.
Great! As you know I love Peggy and am happy to read of her plans.
Need to now know of Helena’s current status and am a little concerned as I also had great affection for her when she was not being destructive to TiBette.
I will, however, leave it to your storytelling talent and look forward to the ride.
Thanks for bringing this story back
