    Desert Rose

Dazed I stood still while the rider skillfully steered her horse in my direction. With a soft ’ho’ the horse halted next to me. The saddle leather crackled when she adjusted herself, resting her hands on the saddle knob. ’Are you lost?’ An angelic voice called from up above.

Shading my eyes for the sun I looked up and found frisky eyes, golden as maple sirup attentively examining me from under a white cowboy hat. Suddenly light-headed I swallowed and put my bag down. ’Define lost.’

She chuckled and it sounded like the chime of the spurs on her sharp pointed cowboy boots. ’We can have an hour long discussion about the definition of being lost, but lengthly conversations we usually have here on our porch, in the shade and with some refreshment in our hand.’ She leaned down and handed me a flask. ’Here, you look like you need it.’

’Thank you. Earlier I started to doubt Southern hospitality when some asshole just honked and left me in this god forsaken desert to die.’ I said overly dramatic before quenching my thirst with the ice cold water. ’My car broke down.’

’Seems you’re out of luck, everyone left for the rodeo. The closest car repair is about a hundred miles away. No one will be back before Monday noon.’ She stretched her words and elongated the vowels, turned them into diphthongs and it sounded incredibly sexy.

    ’Fuck.’

’Do you have anywhere to be?’

’Nowhere in particular.’ I scanned the road left and right peeling my dress from my moist skin. ’Is there a motel close by?’

’It’s closed…’ She mouthed amused before elegantly jumping down her horse.

    ’Right… the rodeo.’

’The rodeo.’ Taking the reins she extended her other hand. ’I’m Tina.’

    ’Bette. Bette Porter.’

A slanting ray of sun shone over the rolling hills and the undulating landscape stretched as far as my eyes could see while the old ceiling fan made the wind chime clang in a languid breeze. In the distance cows grazed along a lagoon blue lake, hemmed by unruly shrubs and a trees. So different from a buzzing city filled with smog. My mind slowed down and surrendered to the tranquility of the breathtaking view, my beloved Mustang a vague memory of a hampering life. When a few horses galloped by and disturbed the cows in their rumination I stretched my legs to grant my painful feet some relief and picked up my note book to quickly scramble down a few random thoughts.

    2. What fabulously deliciously penetrating story.

      Different . . . E R O T I C.

Two women so complicated . . . willing to separate . . . perhaps 4ever in this world cosmos.

Only to find that they were MEANT to live . . . as a family . . . right now.

Brava!!!! my friend!!! Whatever U create next, WE’LL be waiting!!!!!!

    3. This is fantastic. I was up until 2am reading and re-reading. This is a story that sits with you the next day like an old friend. I loved it. I could picture the very air simmering around them, the angst and longing from Tina, the patience and resilence from Bette. One walking away, the other letting her go. AND a happy ending. Goodness. Thank you!

    4. I truly loved this story, I felt very heartbroken at the idea of two people so in love living apart and pretending nothing ever happened. So happy they found their way back to each other. You write amazing stories!:)
