Desert Rose
’The vet in me agrees with you.’
I looked at her slender fingers that seemed to be made for delicate touches instead of the rough work as a vet. ’Do you define yourself by what you do?’
’That’s my role in this community.’
’If you’re a vet, then why aren’t you at the rodeo?’
’That’s exactly why, for me it borders with animal abuse. Besides if you saw one, you saw them all.’ She wrinkled her nose before the mischievous sparkle returned to her eyes. ’And I would’ve missed out on the opportunity of saving a stranded stranger.’
’That you did. Thank you.’ I said wondering why she felt more like someone I had known my whole life than a stranger. I clenched my fingers around the wide armrests of the chair holding back from tucking the lock of hair that covered her eye back. ’I better go now.’
’Stay.’ She said, maybe even surprising herself. ’It’s getting late and you know… the rodeo.’
’Are you sure? I mean…’
’Of course. It’s not often that I have a chance to talk to someone who doesn’t talk about cows and stallions.’
***
After a shower that soothed my aching feet I found her in the kitchen humming along with the country songs coming from the old radio on the window sill. ’Can I help with something?’
’Uhm..’ Surprised she looked up from the chopping board. ’No thank you, I’m almost done but you could set the table.’
Shiny buckles, medals and other rodeo trophies attracted my attention on my way to the cupboard . Between them, as if it was just another trophy stood one of those standard wedding pictures. For reasons I couldn’t explain I felt a pang in my heart as I looked at the picture. Possessively he held her in a stiff embrace as she smiled in the lens with a distant look. The typical guy who displayed his trophies in his house for everyone to see, wearing his ego upon his sleeve. ’Kids?’ I held up the picture.
I regretted the question as soon as her eyes turned to the color of somber autumn leafs. Her hands stilled under the water tap before deliberately drying them on the towel. ’No, my husband… no.’

Wow…. what a story… lovely… romantic and in some ways heartbreaking. Tina finds her way to Bette. An amazing story… lovely. I am not sure I have enough superlative to say what this story did for me.

I do love happy Endings!
This is fantastic. I was up until 2am reading and re-reading. This is a story that sits with you the next day like an old friend. I loved it. I could picture the very air simmering around them, the angst and longing from Tina, the patience and resilence from Bette. One walking away, the other letting her go. AND a happy ending. Goodness. Thank you!
I truly loved this story, I felt very heartbroken at the idea of two people so in love living apart and pretending nothing ever happened. So happy they found their way back to each other. You write amazing stories!:)
