    Disappearing

So, despite the odds they faced in the Kansas City warehouse, Bette was convinced this nightmare scenario, with gun-toting men surrounding them, and threatening hellfire, would not end any differently from every other adventure she and Kaci had been in together.

She held on to the boy’s hand, knelt beside him until she was at his eye level, and smiled at the trembling child confidently, as the shouting match continued. “You’re TJ right? Kaci is your friend? She’s my friend, too. I knew her by a different name when we first met, but I still like her name now. Do you? ”

The boy nodded, and his lower lip started to tremble.

“No, no. Don’t cry. Kaci is going to get us out of this. Trust me. She’s gotten me out of worse spots before. We’ll soon have you back to your mom. Tina, right? She’s the one who called Kaci, after those bad men took you?” As the boy looked confusedly back at her, Bette shrugged her shoulders imperceptibly, and then drew the boy close, as if preparing to carry him. “I know, I know. The story confused me, too. Kaci said she’d explain when I got here, about Tina and you, and so…”

She was still drawing him close when gunfire, explosions, and general bedlam inside and outside the warehouse erupted. As she whirled in the direction of the first explosion, the boy sitting uncertainly in her arms, someone knocked her and the boy to the ground. Acrid smoke began to fill her lungs but, alertly, she covered the boy with her body, worried now that this time, there was no getting out of this adventure. Alas, not from Thymoscera after all?

At some point, the shooting stopped, and she’d been pulled up bodily from the ground, TJ still in her arms. She swayed on her feet as someone wrenched TJ from her grasp, then a phone was put to her ear, and someone called Tina was sobbing into the phone, thanking her and asking her to let go of TJ, so that the boy could be taken back to New York.

She loosened her arms, instinctively trusting this voice on the phone. “Please, please, give my son to the woman holding the phone.”

I am grateful to the someone who sent you the draft.

It is a fantastic first chapter and like Bette “There better be something worth running to at the end of all this.” But knowing you it will be worthy!

    4. Hello! Am glad the story is finding an audience. Was working on the next couple of chapters but am revising aspects of what’s going on, bec I think we’re not allowed to post sexy scenes. And you know how the Bette in my stories likes to play.

Let me know if you think this story continues to work!
