With the renovations for the gallery underway, and the wedding just months away Bette prepared to tackle the CAC board to end her contract. She met with her lawyer and she also consulted with Melvin on their game plan but thanks to Peggy Peabody’s intervening on Bette’s behalf she had only to show up to a special board meeting where there was a unanimous vote to buy out her two-year commitment. In addition, she was given a sizable financial settlement to avoid any lawsuits. When the board learned from Peggy of the scheming between Helena, Franklin and Leo to undermine Bette’s fundraising efforts they acted immediately and terminated them.

Franklin and Leo tried to defend their actions but there was no defense that the board would accept. The board was within their rights to terminate any employee that breached the ethical conduct clause written in their contracts. Leo and Franklin were further screwed when they learned of Helena’s disappearance. She’d promised to protect Franklin’s position and to elevate Leo into Bette’s directorship role in addition to monetary inducements when they’d become her accomplices.

If they hadn’t left quietly the board was willing to bring charges and involve the courts if needed, but it was in everyone’s best interest to keep everything in-house to avoid a scandal. They’d just recovered from a recession and were realizing financial gains and boost in attendance at the museum. This upturn was largely due to Bette’s resourcefulness in bringing Provocations to the CAC against fierce competition that threatened their viability in a very aggressive landscape.

For Leo and Franklin agreeing to the terms of their leave gave them hope of obtaining future employment. They would not get any recommendations from the board but at the same time there were no detractors to keep them from seeking employment in an industry other than the arts.

For her part, Peggy’s involvement was not only to benefit Bette, but also to protect the Peabody name. Keeping Helena’s antics out of the public record was incumbent on the board’s discretion. At the end of the day, the CAC remained in good standing with the Peabody Foundation. Peggy pledged a legacy gift in her will with the stipulation that the integrity of their institution and her name was never again compromised, and they had to conduct their business ethically which naturally they all agreed to.

    1. Wow….what a nice gift! I know Bette is going to be beyond thrilled. And since she has the rest of the collection, she is going to be overwhelmed..

A wedding in the snow….how wonderful. That’s a lot of money for a wedding and only 50 guest? That’s a lot of money. Melvin is being generous. Really generous.

Lovely chapter. Glad that Franklin, Leo and Helena have all been retired.. good luck getting a new job.

Thank you for this….Keep it coming.

      • Thank you Martha. $250k is excessive amount isn’t it. I have no idea what it would cost, just wanted to emphasize Melvin’s generosity. I appreciate all your support of the authors on this site. I’m also enjoying reading your story.

    2. That is a lot of money for the wedding! But i love how you portait Melvin in this story, he is so different and i actually like him!

So happy that Franklin and Leo were fired, they deserve it.

Sad that this story is almost finished ☹️

I hope you will continu to write!

      • Bibi28. Yeah after I posted I realized that was probably too much money for a wedding with only 50 guests, however I was more emphasizing Melvin’s generosity and that he was sparing no expense for the wedding and honeymoon. Complete change from how he was portrayed in the show. I am ending the story but hope to finish my other stories and maybe come up with a concept for a new one that hasn’t already been done. Thank you for being such a loyal reader and supporter here.

      • izzie, I need to finish this one and Love a Bridge Between Our Differences but sequel to Out of the mouths of Babes is definitely on the agenda. Thank you for holding me to it.

      • Thank you SassyGran. Your great support is what keeps me writing. I am working on the epilogue. I’m trying something a bit different in how I write it so may take a bit of time to get it right.

    3. Yeah, not in many stories Melvin plays for “good guys”.

By the way – interesting fact – only two actors from TLW won individual awards for acting. It’s Laurel and actor who plays Melvin. Weird, isn’t it about second?

      • Zhenya, I know it was hard to like Melvin but it would have been nice to see him come around and accept Bette and Tina’s relationship in the show.

I didn’t know about the awards but Ossie Davis is legendary and he was a great actor so not too surprised he was awarded. I’m a big Laurel fan too. Now more for her art than acting but she did a great job on the show as well.
