Guilty Conscience
Dana snorts. “You said she had a collection—”
“She was honing her craft! There ain’t nothin’ funny about that…” Alice retorts, then sweeps her arm around the group. “Shame on you all.”
Shane tilts her head. “Right. Then why exactly did you break up?”
Alice shrugs, eyes wide in mock innocence. “Let’s just say, she wanted me to get a little too friendly with one of the puppets, if you know what I mean.”
Shane shakes her head. ”Uh, I don’t actually, and I don’t wanna know….”
Everyone erupts into laughter.
Shane glances over at Bette, whose mouth is a straight line despite the flicker of a smile in her eyes. “Sorry, Bette,” she says softly. “I know you’re not exactly in the laughing mood tonight.”
Bette exhales, the tension melting out of her shoulders. “It’s fine,” she murmurs. “Actually, I like the distraction.”
Alice’s expression darkens. She sits up straighter, tapping a fingertip against her beer bottle. “I still can’t believe Michelle is doing this. Like, what the hell?”
Tina curls her lips into a wry smirk and presses her forehead to the crown of Bette’s head. “Our sentiments exactly.”
Bette turns her face toward Tina’s touch and brushes a kiss across her palm.
Alice smiles. “Hey, hurry up and finish your beers, ladies. Naked time might be closer than we think.”
They all laugh—until the back gate creaks open. The chatter dies when Michelle steps into the circle of light, the cool night air lifting stray strands of her hair.
Bette’s smile snaps off. A storm flickers behind her eyes. “What the fuck? Why are you just walking into my backyard, Michelle?”
Michelle smirks, one brow arching. “Sorry—I sometimes forget this isn’t mine anymore…” She gestures toward a corner where pale rosebuds cling to a knobby stem. “Nice to see my rose bush finally decided to bloom…” Her gaze flicks back to Bette, cold as steel, as she takes in the way Tina’s hand drifts through Bette’s hair. “Where is Mickey?”
“He’s sleeping…you’re late….” Bette says.
“Meeting ran long….” Michelle says.
Bette rolls her eyes and stands up. “I’ll go get him….”
Bette walks inside, and Michelle points around the group. “So, I guess I’m no longer invited to these hangouts, huh?”

Well said Carmen, what a bitch
Does Michelle really think she will make a chance in the court. Bitch.
Love how Bette calms Tina and shows her unconditional love.
Thank you so much for the update!
