Guilty Conscience
Bette presses a kiss to Mickey’s temple and beams. “Say good night to your aunties, sweetie.”
“Night…” Mickey echoes, then twists toward Tina and offers a chubby hand in a wave. “Bye, T.T.,” he adds earnestly.
Tina’s posture softens immediately; her shoulders slump, and she returns his wave with a misty-eyed smile. “Goodnight, buddy.”
Michelle stalks forward and gently pries Mickey from Bette’s arms. The toddler lets out a small protest. “What part of ‘I don’t want him around her’ don’t you get? Was my lawyer not clear in the paperwork?” Michelle’s voice quavers as though reality is crashing through her carefully constructed rage.
Tina closes her eyes as her guilt begins to resurface. She breathes in, trying to hold off the sting of regret.
Bette brushes a stray curl from Mickey’s forehead, her voice calm and steady. “Mama loves you, sweetheart…”
“Love you…” Mickey says in a sleepy voice as he rests his head on Michelle’s shoulder.
Bette takes a step back and glares at her ex-wife. “If you have anything to say to me from now on, you’ll go through my lawyer.” She glances toward the side gate. “Now get off my property.”
Michelle hesitates, watching as Bette walks back over and takes her place between Tina’s legs. With her nostrils flaring, she turns on her heel. Her shoulders stiffen, and she walks out of the backyard.
“What a bitch….” Carmen says. She then looks at Bette. “Sorry, Bette, I know that’s the mother of your child, but…. what a bitch….”
Shane sighs. “Jealousy and bitterness make people do some spiteful shit…”
Tina continues to run her hand through Bette’s hair distractedly. She closes her eyes, all the thoughts she’s shoved aside flooding back—guilt, love, fear—running cold through her veins……

Later, Bette leans against the doorframe, arms crossed as her friends tumble out into the night.
Alice lingers, one eyebrow raised. ”I’d thank you for dinner, but since your contribution was limited to uncorking wine…” She gestures vaguely at the living room. ”Thanks for the ambiance?”
”You’re welcome.” Bette flicks her fingers toward the porch. ”Now scram.”
Alice blows an exaggerated kiss and then hurries after the others. ”Carmen! Wait up! Picture this for the wedding, midnight blue with silver accents…”

Well said Carmen, what a bitch
Does Michelle really think she will make a chance in the court. Bitch.
Love how Bette calms Tina and shows her unconditional love.
Thank you so much for the update!
