I Need My Best Friend – Part 17
‘What do you mean?’
‘You said once that we would make this decision together, but I don’t think either of us ever really thought that would be the way it would be. I think it was always going to come down to who had the momentum at the end.’
‘And who do you think that is?’
‘You.’
‘All right, well, is there anything you would like to say to start?’
‘What, you mean like to plead my case?’
‘Yes, why don’t you tell me how you see things and if I don’t agree then I’ll tell you how I see things?’
Tina had a confidence about her that Bette hadn’t expected, she thought Tina would be upset and nervous about telling Bette she had decided to leave. She had thought of what she was going to say, but it just didn’t seem to fit now.
‘Bette?’
Bette stood and moved around so she could sit on the coffee table in front of Tina. She reached out to hold Tina’s hand; she kissed the inside of Tina’s wrist and then placed Tina’s hand over her heart.
‘I know there is still a lot to work through and that we have a long, hard journey ahead of us. I’m sorry for being unfaithful and breaking our vows. I’m sorry for all the times I discounted your feelings. I love you; I’m more in love with you today than I have ever been before. With every beat of my heart I pray you’ll come back to me, but if you can’t and you walk out that door tonight, I promise I’ll always be the best friend I know how to be for you.’
Bette stood and brushed a tear from Tina’s check, ‘I’m sorry if this is hard for you T, just go ahead and say whatever you need to say. I’ll just sit here and listen.’
Bette sat back down on the sofa and braced herself.
‘I wasn’t expecting you to be so straight forward with your thoughts, thank you for what you said. I told Kit that I wish I had the words to tell her what it’s like to be loved by you. She called you a force of nature.
When I left that night I cursed the day I ever walked into your gallery, but that was just my hurt and anger. I’m thankful that I got to experience your love; everyone should get to experience a love like that. Second chances, I think those are few and far between, the real ones anyway. I wonder if those fortunate few who get a second chance at love know just how lucky they are? If they realize it won’t work if they aren’t willing to deconstruct past mistakes so they can have a better foundation, that they have to endure the pain of reliving the past to have a future, or if they waste the chance only to bring about the inevitable.
You asked me once to be open to the possibility of being with you and although I regret things we’ve done along the way to damage our relationship I want you to believe that I never regretted the choice I made to be with you.’
Tina got up, took Bette’s hand and motioned for her to stand. She looked deep into Bette’s eyes and knew neither one of them could take much more. She put her arms around Bette and pulled her close, after a few moments she said, ‘what we had was beautiful Bette and I think we deserve a second chance to get it right this time.’
Tina felt Bette start to go limp and helped her sit back down on the sofa.
‘Bette? Look at me are you all right?’
‘Did you say we deserve a second chance?’
‘I love you Bette, now come here.’
It started as a sweet gentle kiss and ended with them both struggling for air.
‘Bette?’
‘Hmm?’
‘Do you still feel like you’re a toad?’
