I Need My Best Friend – Part 17
‘Bette?’
‘Hey.’
‘Why are you staring out the window?’
‘Just looking, it’s beautiful here, peaceful, there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to leave.’
‘Come sit by the fire with me before we turn in?’
‘Sure.’
Bette walked toward the chair and started to sit down.
‘Sit by me?’
Bette moved over to the couch and sat next to Tina.
‘Tina, I was thinking about tomorrow night.’
‘What about it?’
‘I don’t want you to have to worry with cooking; I don’t want you to feel rushed when you see Kit. I’ll just pick something up or we can go out or order in.’
‘I promised I’d cook your favorite meal for you.’
‘Well, as much as I would love that I think we should just order or something.’
‘If you’re sure.’
‘Thank you again for thinking of this weekend, I’ve enjoyed being here with you.’
‘I bet you haven’t enjoyed all of it!’
‘We wanted to have some time together and that’s what we’ve had. It would have been nave of us to think we could totally escape the stress and the reality of our situation.’
‘I suppose, are you ready for bed?’
* * * * *
Bette had taken a little longer in the shower than she had planned. Every time she saw Tina cry, knowing she was the cause, made her angry, but it also made her sad that she had been so careless. She stood under the stream of hot water and cried for everything she stood to lose, knowing she had no one to blame but herself and her own fear of appearing weak.
When she went into the bedroom she noticed Tina was practically on the edge of the bed, facing away from Bette’s side of the bed. Bette slipped into bed and carefully stayed on her own side. Even though they had been apart their sleeping habits hadn’t changed, Tina always had to be touching Bette to sleep. So Tina’s self imposed exile to her own side of the bed wasn’t lost on Bette.
It was after midnight and Bette had not been able to fall asleep. She lay there trying to organize her thoughts about what she felt would surely happen tomorrow night. Tina had tossed and turned since Bette had gotten into bed. She couldn’t remember Tina ever being so restless. Bette lightly placed her hand on Tina’s back and started to gently massage hoping to calm her.
