Bette was shaking hands with a client when she saw Emma and Helena coming into the gallery. Helena was carrying a small blue crate – they both looked serious.
“Its been a pleasure doing business with you Mr Brook – my assistant will arrange for the piece to be sent over to Paris for you – certainly – thank you again “

Bette walked with her customer to the exit and stood exchanging small talk for a few minutes while she wondered what Helena and Emma were doing at her gallery in the middle of the day. She finally saw her customer down the stairs and out of the gallery and hurried back to where Emma and Helena were standing talking
“Hey there you two – what you both doing shirking off work ?”
    “Have you seen Tina ?”
    “What ? No – she’s at work – or is she ?”
“Have you not had a call or a text ?” Emma asked
Bette gestured for them to follow her into her office. She picked up her phone and checked it
“The last message from Tina was at 8:59 on her way to work”
Helena looked at Emma who shook her head
“Would you try and call her ?”
“What the hell is going on ?”
    “Call her “Emma urged.
Bette put the phone down on the desk and crossed her arms “Someone – preferably – one of you two should start explaining what the fuck is going on “
“Peggy set us up last night “
    “What ?”
“We were at different events last night – I told you this right ?”
    “Yes”
“We were both propositioned by two tasty women – it didn’t take much digging this morning to discover that both females worked for escort agencies – we confronted my mother and she as good as admitted it.”
“That’s a terrible thing for Peggy to do – she was trying to split you up by putting temptation in the way and seeing which one of you bite ?”
    “Yes “
Bette was shocked – she knew Peggy had a moral code that was different to everyone else she knew but this was beyond what Bette thought was acceptable
“So why is Tina missing ?”
“Tina was working in Peggy’s office and overheard some of the conversation – we don’t know – we didn’t know that she was so close. As far as we are both concerned this was between Peggy and us – we didn’t really plan to even tell anyone else – it was strictly between the three of us”
“So what did Tina hear ?”
“We don’t know for sure Bette but – well we think that she heard me confronting Peggy. Peggy called my bluff and said that while I hadn’t taken the bait Helena had”
Bette sighed “Tina knows that Peggy set the two of you up and she thinks that you cheated on her mom “
    “Yes “
    “You didn’t ?” Bette asked
“No of course I fucking well didn’t – as I told you at length yesterday – I love Emma and I don’t know whether she is the one for me – she doesn’t know it either but that’s something that is between the two of us and it has fuck all to do with Peggy or anyone else. I did not sleep with the escort – Emma and I were texting one another all of last night when we both started to smell a rat “
“Okay – sorry for the question “ Bette picked up her phone and dialled Tina’s number. After a few rings it went to her voice mail
“Hey babe – its me – call me “
Bette put her phone down and perched herself on the edge of her desk
“So what are the two of you going to do ?”
“Find Tina “ Emma said “She must be angry and upset “
“And probably if she believed Peggy she will want to swing for me”
Bette rubbed her face “Oh God – things have just been starting to fall into place for her – she was so looking forward to the job”
“Bette – there is no reason why she should resign over this – its between the three of us”
Bette looked at Emma “You really think that ? “
    “I don’t know “
“You would be happy with her working so closely to someone who would do what she did to her own daughter ?”
“She cannot resign “ Helena said
“Okay – lets all take a few deep breathes here. Lets find out what she heard and where she is – if she has missed half the story she is going to have to hear all of it. As for what happens after that – that is down to Tina”
“Peggy would hate for her to resign “
“Have you not told your mother where to shove her job yet ? that’s what happens when she sticks her nose in your life and you have had enough “
“I am thinking about what I am going to do “
“Hence the crate of your coffee mugs and bits and pieces ?”
Helena shrugged “Bette – what happened has nothing to do with Tina”
“I would say that when someone tries to stitch her mother up and that is the same person who is going to be her employer – I would say that it has one hell of a lot to do with Tina. I will find her and we will talk”
“Can we help ?” Helena asked
“Leave it to me for now” Bette said “You two should go and have a stiff drink.. You need to decide what you are going to do. Peggy cannot keep trying to run your lives”
Emma nodded “I am worried about Tina”
Bette touched Emma’s arm “I know – as soon as I speak to her I will call one of you – she will be okay”
    “She adores my mother “
Bette picked her jacket up “I think its safe to say that she’s gone off her – tell James I want to see him – damn Peggy”
    “Sorry Bette “
“Not your fault but I am trying to get my inbox cleared so Tina and I can go on holiday without me worrying about this place”
“Let me do it “ Helena said
    “What ?”
“Let me stand in for you “
    “You are insane Peabody “
“No – it makes sense – I am not going to be going back for several weeks if at all – and I am going to need something to do – come on Bette – you know that you can trust me “
Bette looked at her friend – this was another example of her showing all the signs of growing up
“Come and see me tomorrow “ Bette said “Wear a business suit and bring your resume “
    Emma laughed
    “You what ?”
“You think I am going to put just anyone in charge of my precious business ?”
“Woman has a point “ Emma smiled “I don’t want my daughter dating someone whose business is going down the toilet “
“I like the two of you better when you are rivals – okay – I will come and see you tomorrow – no resume “
Bette winked at Helena and taking her briefcase she headed out of the door
“Think she will find her ?”
Emma reached out and took Helena’s hand” There comes a point in a child’s life when it stops running first and foremost to their parent and starts running to their partner. Tina has always run to me or Kate – in the last few months – she goes to Bette when its something good or bad – I guess that’s the way it should be -you want to buy me a strong drink ?”
“As long as you buy me one “

    1. Oh oh, you are the drama Queen of this site.

What a terrible thing Peggy has done and now Tina is missing, not knowing the whole story. This is a utter mess and drags our couple in it.

I am not a fan of Emma and Helena in a relationship, but Peggy has gone to far. She should have stay out of it and let it run its course. Now she has lost her child and maybe Tina working for her. She lost the respect for now from Bette and maybe her parents when they hear what she has done.

Most important, where is Tina?!!! Go find her Bette!

      Great chapter!

    2. Waking up to this on a Sunday morning is only okay if there is another post SOON. Where did Tina go? She turned off her phone. This messes up everything. Tina really adored Peggy. And vice versa. No way Tina is going to want to go forward with the job. And she was so happy and excited. Not anymore. Maybe Helena can talk to her. I guess the birthday truce was a one off. Peggy will have to do an awful lot of explaining and apologizing and that just doesn’t seem like her style. On the other hand she loves and respects Bette and when she realizes she may have lost her and by proxy the respect of Melvin and Rosemary she may very well finally do some heartfelt apologizing. I love Peggy. Such a phenomenal character. But she obviously can be a handful. Admit I did not see this coming. Emma and Helena not a great pairing in my opinion. BUT…. not cool. Does Peggy Peabody do guilt? We will see. AND where is Tina? AND why didn’t she go to Bette? Such a journey. Please update soon.

    3. My bet is that Tina is either at her apartment or Bette’s apartment. I need to read back, had Bette and Tina completed the moving of Tina to Bette? I didn’t think they had but planned it to be completed before leaving Monday on vacation. She is somewhere just trying to think this through.

There is nothing like giving someone enough rope that they will hang themselves with with it as a trap. But then to lie to someone about doing it or the results of the trap is beneath immoral. Peggy was warned by Tina herself to let this work itself out. But Peggy could not exhibit any kind of patience whatsoever and has been caught by the person she really did not want to be caught with – Tina!! Upsetting Helena or Emma did not mean as much as upsetting Tina and who in return will upset Bette. Oh what complicated webs weave when we practice to deceive.

Both Emma and Helena conducted themselves as adults in both their conversations with Peggy and with Bette. They were never irrational. They never threatened. They merely allow the plot to unfold and Peggy to see that she had been trapped in her own trap and her losses may be far greater than she ever anticipated…

And Bette is right – how Tina handles this once the all the facts are known are up to Tina. It’s Tina’s employment and her future which lies in the balance. The question becomes – can she overlook this behavior from her boss which was unethical and clearly directed to besmirch the character of Emma and Helena?

This chapter is very impressive. The author has brought the most unsympathetic couple to the most unabashed victims of parental objection I believe I have ever seen.. The same couple has gone from giggly teenagers to mature responsible women who are conducting themselves in a responsible relationship. An amazing chapter. Honors for best drama for the month ……

Thank you for this….. wonderful story….
