Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Two (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“Okay.” Bette nodded and turned to face the shore, discretely letting out a huge breath. “I suppose you’re wondering why I called you here..”

“Not at all, ma’am.” Henry fibbed.

Bette smirked, looking at the manager through the corner of her eyes. “You can lose that look of anxiousness on your face, I’m not going to chew you out or tear you a new one.” She chuckled lightly, sensing the man’s nervousness. “I just wanted to ask you something about the hotel.”

“Really?” Henry asked, immediately perking up and giving himself away. Realizing what he had done, he cleared his throat and replaced his relieved expression with a controlled smile. “I mean, okay, I see. Um.. what do you want to know Miss Porter?”

“I only have one question.” Bette answered, turning around to face the guy again. She was supposed to ask a lot – intending to turn this simple conversation into a full blown interrogation. But now that she knew that her father was in contact with the guy – she needed to be careful. Knowing how her dad operated, she knew the simple phone call he made to the manager carried only one purpose – to tell her that he was privy to the fact that she might snoop around. Changing tactics at the last minute, Bette decided to ask the most important one in her list of queries instead. “How many employees do you have here?”

That’s it? Henry fought the urge to sigh in relief. “It depends,” He replied thoughtfully. “During peak season, we have about 208 employees in our ranks – with positions ranging from housekeeping personnel to tour guides and dive instructors. But in any given time, there are roughly 172 people working here.”

“I see..” Bette mumbled, biting her bottom lip, absorbing the information. Doing the math quickly in her head, she estimated that the hotel had an average of 190 employees. This one, The Porter Regency Maldives, was relatively smaller compared to the other TPR hotels found all over the globe. And if this place had that much workers, then it means that the bigger ones had double or triple its amount. Thinking of this fact, Bette felt lightheaded all of a sudden. Deja vu, she closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. The past was in danger of repeating itself again – but this time in a much bigger and catastrophic scale. The healthy amount of food that she had consumed this morning began to announce their presence inside her stomach as her tummy lurched and made flip-flops. God, she felt so queasy. Before she could get sick in front of the man, she forced a tight smile and started motioning for him to follow her inside the room. The manager was taken aback by the brunette’s obvious sudden shift in mood and the abruptness of their encounter, but he wisely kept his silence and went after her instead.

    1. Brilliant, as always, Alchemy. Your dialogue and descriptions are so funny. The image of itchy, swollen Bette is just hilarious, especially the breakfast scene. I always look forward to your posts as they brighten any day! Thanks so much for continuing this story.

    2. A hairbrush is a good way to help relieve the itch. Damn jellyfish and other stinging things. I guess that the economic situation is even hitting the fan fiction stories. I love Bette and Tina with their humor along with their love.

    3. Poor Bette, she is too young to be in this economical dilemma. Is it that bad?, is she afraid she has to reduce the number of employees by firing them?, O Alchemy, I’m really hooked up and want to know what will happen :)

    4. Okay… after the fun in the sun with Alice and Shane, and Bette’s… unfortunate (but funny)… bite on her derrière, I’m now worried. Why are the number of employees significant? Is Bette worried about the sheer amount of people she’ll have in her employ? What’s going on with Melvin? What’s happening with PGC? It’s all very ominous, but very gripping. Love the story, thanks Alchemy.

    5. Have I told you I LOVE this story?? Their bantering is so funny & I love both the tenderness & the roughness between them. As you know the “…” are my favorites- they speak volumes..I mean I can SEE the expressions on their faces! And now you leave us hanging tooo…You are SO VERY AWESOME!!

    6. Ok ack to reality humhum. Number of emplyee making Bette seek? Why? trouble trouble trouble. Tat was great love it as usual and sooooo funny. PPVS

    7. That was great, funny about Alice and Shane. Poor Bette about the itchy lol, that was funny and cute. Now let see whats going with the Porters business. Please post more, thanks!
