Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part One (a HYD-inspired fic)

    “James.”

“Stop saying my name like that, you’re not my mother.”

James and Joyce, the top assistants in the PGC, stared each other down as they stood at the foot of their boss’ hospital bed. Neither one flinching at the other’s glare. A power play between the people behind two powerful Porters.

That as it may, it was the notorious tongue-clicker who spoke up first.

“Don’t be so brash, James. You heard Griffin, he thinks he’s gonna pull through. So there’s no point in getting Miss Bette to come here and see her father like this. Don’t cause her unnecessary worry and him embarrassment.” Joyce hissed.

“Embarrassment?” James shook his head in frustration at the woman before him. “What the hell is so embarrassing about getting sick? It’s not like he got a STD or something.” He argued.

“The man hates to appear weak!” Joyce whispered sharply. “Why do you think he’s been doing things for his daughter through you and Leo? Why do you think he won’t admit he was wrong and make it easier for everyone by just accepting his daughter’s relationship? He. Hates. To. Appear. Weak. Melvin Porter has enough pride to supply the whole world.”

James scoffed. “He nearly died. You think he cares about appearances now?” He turned away and headed for the door.

    “Where are you going?”

“To Miss Bette.” James answered without beat.

Joyce’s eyes grew big. “Don’t you dare!” She exclaimed, horrified that this young assistant was bold enough to go against their master’s strict orders. She followed him as he proceeded to walk out of Melvin’s hospital room, the biggest one in the whole unit. “James.” Joyce warned. “James!” She yelled after the guy as he continued to walk away.

With an unyielding stance, James stopped in his tracks and addressed the woman tailing him. “I’m not being brash. I get what you’re saying. I know how you feel about following Mr. Porter’s instructions to a tee, but he ordered those things when his daughter moved out, not when he was on the verge of dying.” He reasoned out in a calm manner. “Joyce, you are devoted to her father, but my loyalty lies with Miss Bette. And she has the right to know.” He expressed to a speechless Joyce. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go get my boss.” He turned around and walked briskly towards the elevators.

    1. One of the absolute best stories I’ve read. Glad you’re back with bank account intact! Glad Melvin has woken up both literally and emotionally. Love the whipped Bette… the dialogue between her and Tina is too cute. Look forward to the other half of the chapter.

    2. This is the way to go Melvin. Bette is your daughter and you love her. You aso own an apology to Ken and Tina tho. Great post Alchemy10. dana still has to apologise to Tina.Bette and Tina are soooooooooo cute , they are funny, full of love and my hope. Can’t wait for the other half to be posted

    3. Yey! Melvin is stepping off his high horse! I really, really, really love your story. It has the right mix of drama and comedy in it. Thanks for teh chapter!

    4. Another great chapter from the queen of story telling herself. Yay for Melvin. The funny parts have me rolling so hard and yelling at like 4 in the morning, my neighbors are going to try to have me evicted soon. Can’t wait for the next post. Tah!

    5. You’re back!! Great chapter as usual… Dana, I think, won’t be hurting Alice any time soon. But she and Tina still have some making up to do. Maybe a helpful push, even from Porter? And I’m glad Melvin’s coming around. He obviously loves his daughter, but it’s good that his stubbornness is gone so he can see that. And B&T are still just the cutest! Love the story, Alchemy, thanks for the psot!
