Just The Girl – Chapter Twenty (a HYD-inspired fic)

Sonja raised an eyebrow as she watched her young master disappear inside the bathroom. Something isn’t right, she scratched her head. After a few beats, she clutched her chest in worry when she heard the shrill sound of Bette’s off-key singing from the other side of the bathroom door. "Dear God.." She whispered. Should she call Mr. Porter or a doctor? She thought in genuine concern for Bette’s well being as she heard the brunette do her own rendition of The Turtles’ So Happy Together.

    9:55 AM. Santa Monica Pier.

Bette stepped out from her newest plaything, a red 1963 Jaguar XK-E Roadster, and walked towards the entrance of the pier as she twirled her car keys around her fingers and hummed U2′s Beautiful Day. She high-fived two five year old kids that passed her by and winked at their amused looking parents. With a little step in her walk, Bette reached her destination and jumped up to tap a sign dangling from a post. "Score!" She whispered under her breath as she landed down on her feet. As she straightened up, she looked down on her clothes and wiggled her eyebrows – liking what she saw. It took her nearly an hour to choose the correct outfit for this special day. She wanted something nice and casual yet elegant and chic at the same time. After trying on different combinations, she finally settled on a white and gray tunic top by Marc Jacobs, denim capri pants and black step-ins. She accentuated her outfit with brown aviator shades, a silver necklace and a simple black Prada bag. She put just the right amount of make-up on and tied her curly brown hair up with a ponytail. "Looking exceptionally good as always Porter." She smirked, congratulating herself for passing the high standards she has set upon herself for this date. She looked down on her diamond-studded wristwatch and smiled. She was early.. more than an hour early but she really didn’t mind. She was feeling restless at home so she decided to leave as soon as she finished preparing for the date.

She walked over to the wooden railing and leaned forward, looking at the Ferris wheel in the distance. She has never ridden one before, she had always wanted to but her father never allowed her to ride one. He was always saying something about how unsafe it was and how inappropriate it was for a Porter to enjoy such frivolous entertainment designed for the masses. Well fuck that, she smiled to herself when the large wheel started spinning around. She was set on riding that thing with Kennard today. She didn’t care if all the screws and bolts got loose and the Ferris wheel rolled off into the Pacific ocean. As long as she was with Kennard, she would be fine with anything. She smiled a little goofy, imagining the two of them sitting side by side as they took in the breathtaking view from high up. Maybe I could pretend to be afraid of heights, she rubbed her hands together in child-like excitement as she started making elaborate plans on how she could get Kennard to hold her hand.
