    Kit and Melvin

Kit reached for a magazine that was sitting on the coffee table and opened it up to an article about the event honoring Tina that evening. She handed it to her father. “She’s being recognized for her work in the community with underprivileged children. Just like Maxine she has a passion for charity causes that uplift youth. If you’d just take the time to get to know her you would see what a beautiful heart she has. She’s good people Daddy, don’t miss out on the chance to know her. She’s never disrespected or spoken badly about you regardless of your treatment of her and your intolerance. That says a lot. I only wish I could find someone like that to settle down with.”

“What about Benjamin, he seems like a good man?”

“Yes he is, but you know why I haven’t visited him in Oregon?”

“How could I?” Melvin asked acknowledging that he knew nothing of this elder daughter’s life.

“It’s because we might run into his wife and kids. It’s an affair Daddy, and it’s not going anywhere. I need to break it off.”

“You shouldn’t let him go. If he’s the man you want to be with then you should be with him whatever the cost.”

“I think that is advise you should be giving your other daughter Daddy. Not encouraging me to break up a man’s family.”

Melvin got quiet as everything Kit said to him began to take root. He turned his attention to the magazine he was holding and read the article about Tina’s accomplishment in garnering the largest grant in Peabody history and her tireless work at the Center. It was an impressive article and he couldn’t deny that this woman was worthy of taking notice. However, what caught his attention was the photograph of Tina. He studied her face and acknowledged she was undeniably an exceptionally beautiful woman with an engaging smile. His eyes moved down the page of the full-length picture and stopped mid-way. The suit she was wearing was very flattering but the style made it very evident that she was pregnant. He looked at the date of the article and saw that it was a current issue.

Noticing her father’s change in demeanor Kit sensed that he must have put two and two together. “Yes, that is Bette’s baby she’s carrying. It’s a girl this time and they fully expect her to go to term. I’m very excited to finally be an auntie. It would be so sad if this baby didn’t know her grand-father too.”

Melvin closed the magazine and put it down. He looked deeply into his eldest daughter’s eyes and saw love and sincerity reflected there. “Katie, I’m so sorry … all these years. Such foolishness. Oh Katie” Melvin covers his face to hide the unbidden tears but his breakdown is imminent. Kit kneels in front of him, and wraps her arms around his fragile shoulders. “It’s OK. It’s OK Daddy.” she repeats doing her best to soothe him as the sorrowful sobs wrack his body.
