She reached her hand up and gently stroked the side of Bette’s face. Bette grabbed a fistful of the bottom hem of Tina’s t-shirt and pulled her closer.
“What are you doing?” Bette whispered.
“I don’t know,” Tina replied back quietly before tilting her head up slightly.
Each could feel the short shallow breath of the other on her face.
The squeak in the floorboards warned them even before the sound of the voice forced them apart.
“I’m hungry,” came the plaintive request.
“We’re just getting dinner ready sweetie,” Bette said as Angelica walked through the doorway to the kitchen. “Would you like some apple juice?”
“I’ll get you something to snack on before dinner, how does that sound,” Tina said as she lifted Angelica up into her arms.
Angelica cuddled in and closed her eyes, tucked beneath Tina’s chin.
“I think she just wants some mommy time,” Bette observed. “I’ll work on dinner and you can sit with her. She’ll probably fall asleep again if we let her.”
Tina took a chair and watched Bette as she comfortably made her way around the kitchen. It was true. She didn’t know exactly what she was doing here today. But she couldn’t be happier that she was here.
Chapter 2
Tina backed out of Angelica’s bedroom and turned the knob to keep the latch from making any noise as it clicked into place.
She walked into the living room where Bette was already sitting on one end of the couch, another glass of wine being held casually in her left hand.
“Thanks for putting her to bed,” Bette said. “It gave me a chance to clean up the dishes.”
“Thanks for dinner,” Tina replied. “When did you become such a wizard in the kitchen?”
“You can’t very well take a toddler to restaurants all the time,” Bette smiled. “You quickly lose your clout with maitre d’s.”
Tina spied her full wine glass resting on the coffee table at the end opposite Bette’s position on the couch. She walked over and sat down, tucking her legs underneath her in a cross-legged pose.
The expanse of couch that existed between them was quite daunting. They both quietly sipped at their wine while the silence grew less comfortable.
“Do you use the pool very often?” Tina queried, struggling to fill the void with any topic of conversation.

I certainly remember this story and I love it more now. Thanks for updating the language so the profane language is present. It’s not that I am a complete potty mouth but let’s be realistic. Several of the stories that have transferred over have blanks or asterisks instead of the actual language. In my opinion, when this happens, the stories lose some of their authenticity and the characters lose their edge. I realize that it takes effort to fill in the blanks especially in longer stories. So thanks for doing that.
I find stories harder to read with the asterisks inserted…it’s like a jolt of reality interfering with my escapism. I had to get to the task of editing them out. I do plan to work on more stories; some easier than others because of where the files are. This story was first posted almost 10 (!) years ago, so the digital file was more challenging to retrieve. I’m not much for cursing, but the occasional well placed F-bomb can really get someone’s attention.
@JKS I can’t believe this story is almost 10 years old! It reads now as fresh as it did then. I really love your stories because they are so well written with realism, humor, sarcasm and authenticity. It also helps that for us ORs (Original Readers), it follows canon for the characters and storylines. :-)
