    Letting Go – chapter 19

    Previously in chapter 18:

“Why are you knocking?  Don’t you have the keys right there?”

“Uh-huh” Joanna just nodded as she prayed Tina heard the door, and would come answering it before her mom pushed it open.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

“Someone’s at the door!”  Bette and Tina quickly pushed themselves off one another as they had continued their make-out session.

    Chapter 19:

“What’s wrong with you tonight, Joanna?”  Ms. Kennard asked as she observed her daughter’s peculiar behavior.  Without further questioning, she reached her hand in front of Joanna and opened the door.

‘Please stop making out, please stop making out, please stop making out…’ Joanna wished in her mind as she crossed her fingers.

“So this is how you make it.”  Tina said with a nervous cracked voice.

“Oh…”  Bette replied, having no idea what she was staring at as her head was leaning over Tina’s shoulder from behind; pretending Tina was giving her culinary lessons.

Tina glanced over at Joanna and silently mouthed a “thank you” and Joanna replied back a “you’re welcome” with a smirk and wink.

“Tina, you never cook!  I’m guessing you have some good news for us tonight.”  Ms. Kennard said.  She was full of content realizing that Tina was going to say yes to Eric’s proposal.

“I…uhh…”  Tina didn’t know how to reply to her mother.

Her parents never liked Tina’s previous boyfriends, and for Ms.  Kennard to be so fond of Eric was rare.  Tina and her sisters often joked about how their mother had a little crush on Eric; always introducing him to the family, friends, and neighbors.

What was Tina to do?  On one hand, she didn’t want to disappoint her parents, especially her mother.  Ms.  Kennard always put her children first, always making sure they had what they needed, wanted.  In many ways, she sacrificed herself to provide her children with a better life.  She never asked much out of her daughters, her main concern was that they finish college, find a job, and eventually settle down in marriage.  Step by step, her daughters had followed that path their mothers paved for them.  It wasn’t a difficult one, but a rather simple path.  For Tina, if she married Eric, and completed her path, her mother would feel that she succeeded with one daughter.  How was Tina ever to break her mother’s heart by saying she wasn’t in love with Eric, never was, never will be, and the only person who could ever take her heart was that woman standing behind her?

    7. Excellent. The dinner will be very interesting. Why are men so clueless sometimes…or most of the time? Hopefully Eric will see that there is something between T&B. And that he will not propose in front of them all. Then again, it would be interesting to see Tina refuse to proposal and give the exact reason for the refusal. Kiitos for another great chapter!
