    Little Lies

“I think I need to call Joyce” Bette begins

Tina looks at her curiously, “Babe, I know what they say about needing a lawyer in cases as serious as this but I really don’t feel comfortable with it, it implies that you have something to hide.”

“I realize this Tina but it appears that I was the last person to see Jenny before she died. I just don’t trust the cops, they appear to want to make more of this then it is and I’m not ready for my family or freedom to be taken from me because I may say something innocent and they twist it into some sort of confession. We all know that Jenny and I had a tumultuous relationship at best.”

“If you think it’s best then I will support you but I don’t think Joyce would be the best person to represent you. I mean she practices family law really, you should get a criminal defense attorney.”

That small voice that Bette has chosen to ignore more than once pops into her head; she had sensed for a long time, uneasiness between Tina and Joyce but chalked it up to Joyce first representing Tina in their divorce and then representing Bette in their child custody case. Tina may look at that as a form of betrayal. Finally deciding to inquire further about what appears to be Tina’s discomfort concerning Joyce, Bette asks the question, “What is it T?”

    “What is what?”

“I have noticed on several different occasions that you seem a little uncomfortable where Joyce is concerned.”

Tina doesn’t feel this is the time to express her attitude towards Joyce, “It’s nothing Bette, really, I’m grateful that she helped us work through our custody issues, some of the things she said really hit home for me and I was able to admit that I was just acting vindictively.”

“We both acted irresponsible, we were hurting, it is a natural reaction.”

“I would never have forgiven myself or you if Angie had been taken away from us.”

“Well Thank God that scenario didn’t play out. I would have been more at fault than you; seeing you with Henry and Mikey just hurt so badly. I ached to have that family with you and instead you were sharing it with them and I felt Angie is all I had left.” Bette stops for a minute replaying that moment on the ski lift when she discovered that the documents had already been sent. “It is crazy really when you think about it, it was Helena of all people who opened my eyes to what I was doing. It was rash and I really had tried to call Joyce and tell her I didn’t want to go through with it.”
