Love in Control – Chapter XVI – Who You With?
That drew a chuckle from both Shane and Dana. Alice turned to look at Dana, her manner aggressive. Shane was about to retort, “Yeah, even West Hollywood isn’t as busy at that hour as …” when Alice blurted out, “You know, Dana, what I don’t understand is why you and Lara keep breaking up, and then getting back together. Break up, back together. Break up, get back together. It’s fucked up!”
Lara spied a glance at Dana through the rear view mirror, and caught the familiar exasperated look cross her former girlfriend’s face, punctuated by brows knit together. “Look Alice, you don’t get us. That’s okay. But that’s no reason to be this aggressive towards Lara.”
“You know what? I am so tired of you defending her…” Alice was getting shrill again.
“I’m not defending her! I’m just saying you shouldn’t take out your frustrations about not understanding what’s gone on between two people on one of them.”
“Yeah, and you’re defending her by doing that!” Alice was nearly shouting now.
“Alice, you’re not making any sense with this closed-circuit logic of yours!” Their voices were now definitely not “inside voices” and had easily drowned the chill music out. Shane turned in her seat to look at both of them. “Can you wait ‘til we get outside before you permanently destroy our eardrums?”
Alice glared at Shane, upset that Shane had been trying to get her to quiet down ever since the argument in the elevator. Combined with Dana’s continued defensiveness and Lara’s blasé attitude despite her repeated attempts to bait the red-head, Alice felt she’d had enough. The last place she wanted to be was in Dana’s ex’s luxury ride, while she lost her shit.
“Oh yeah? You want us to take this outside? Fine. I want to get off. Now!”
“What???” Shane and Dana looked at Alice like she had two heads. Lara grimaced but kept driving. As Shane and Dana tried to reason with Alice, Lara glanced at the rear-view mirror and caught Alice staring at her angrily through the mirror.
You want to get out? Fine! Good luck hailing a service car or flagging a cab at this time of night, lady. I’m tired, I had a blast in the party, and I’ve had enough of your sniping and shit, especially since I don’t have anything to hide, and I haven’t been doing anything with Dana. Lara pressed on the emergency button on the dashboard to activate her flashers as she pulled over abruptly. Good thing the car behind wasn’t following closely. She hit the unlock setting for all the doorlocks with unnecessary force, but continued to bite her tongue. Bette, dammit, how much patience do you want me to have with this bitch? She’s been at me the whole night!
With a huff, Alice started to pull on the door’s lever but Dana covered her hand quickly. “Are you flippin’ crazy, Alice? Do you even know how to get to Bette and Tina’s place from here?!”
As Shane exclaimed, exasperated now, “What the fuck Alice?” Alice’ voice grew loud and shrill again, “Well, your crazy ex is the one who pulled over, so it seems like she wants me out of this car …”
Shane shook her head. This has got to be the nuttiest stunt Alice has pulled, yet. “Lara, I’m sorry that we’re putting you through this. I know that it’s three in the morning, and that you’re tired and you must want to get home already. So can you please just take us to Bette and Tina’s duplex? The sooner we get there, the sooner …” Her voice muted as Lara gave her a quick smile and resigned shrug.
Lara pulled quickly into an open gap between cars, flicking her turning light off when she joined the flow of traffic heading east. The others had uncharacteristically fallen quiet after the dramatic outburst a few minutes ago. She hummed along to the song playing in the background, to get to a peaceful place. “This isn’t the worst time I’ve had driving home at 3 in the morning. Don’t worry about it, Shane.”
“You’re cool,” Shane mouthed and then they exchanged a quick smile. “Oh yeah? You gotta share that story one day. I’m pretty sure it won’t be as good as the one I have though, when I drove home pantsless at three in the morning ….”
Dana lightly thumped the back of Shane’s seat. “Get out! No way! In your jeep, Shane?”
“Way, dude. Down the PCH, heading back to Venice. I still feel the draft blowing up my …”
“TMI, Shane!” Lara and Dana both exclaimed.

Dear Lord, woman. You just get better and better. That was the definition of sexy.
Yes, i agree , sexy, very sexy!
Alice, one loud and weird girl. She never was my favourite character. Kick her out of the car and let her get lost.
Thanks for the update!
The book is ending soon, and that was the lead-in or appetizer for the next chapter, which will s-s-s-sizzle! Am debating whether I wrap the book up then or break the ending into two chapters. What say you? If I end it in one, the last chapter will make for a longer read.
Btw: I was advised recently that maybe I should consider writing in other places. I tend to write what I would read, and I look for rhythm, style, flow, voice, nuance, etc. in what I read so aspire to that when I write. These may not be the same things others here look for when they read, hence the advice. Since it takes some work and time to write, in the first place, (time I don’t have much of), maybe the advice-giver is right: it may we’ll be true that my idiosyncratic approach is not a good fit for readers here. Which is fine, btw.
Meanwhile, thanks for the comments @ssgogo93 and @Bibi28 ! I hope you’ll like how the book ends.
Long reads never bother me, it just means more wine.
This site has a rich history of writers of all styles and skill levels. Your particular style is unique, polished, creative, and very entertaining. I’m assuming this is the first and only site you post your stories. The FanFiction lane is an excellent entree into the world of writing, as it has a built-in audience eager for more creative stories that revolve around their favorite characters. You’ve evolved well beyond that. You’ve created your own world of interesting characters, each very colorful, distinctive, and lovable. You’re very talented and you obviously have many stories to tell. While I’d hate to see you go, you should definitely continue writing and perhaps explore different forums to share your work. Whatever you decide, please don’t forget your peeps here and let us know where we can find more @Skydancer musings.

Hi S.
Completely ecstatic that you replied, in fact I was so thrilled with the love and affection these two women have for each other I have continued with poems as well as lyrics to songs once again. I’ve always had an amorous nature and I have been blessed with a wonderful women who appreciates the romantic side of me.
B & T need more children to love on. I am depending on your good sense and writing talent to make their futures long and productive!
In Florida now but will get back to the snow and cold of Toronto soon.
Stay well my friend,
You may end this story in short form or long. Up, down, or sideways. Just as long as it makes you comfortable. If you are comfortable, we get more creative imagination. More imagination the better the read, and with your talent you would entertain the idea of moving on. We will certainly miss you here. Your material is so very appropriate here, This site was always good for bigger discussions and better arguments about all things L word. And when no one could decide what the production staff writers were thinking some one else would write a better edition and appease the masses. If you leave here please remember you will always have a fan club!
Hello,
Thanks for your comment! I’m thinking of writing differently, after this one concludes. Not so public; more intimate; and delivered specifically for a reader or small group of readers. Like a handcrafted cocktail, done omikase-style, by a bartender whose style you like. The drink takes some time to craft, has many layers of taste and flavor, but you wait patiently for your bartender to fix your drink because you know that she has time to do only a few such cocktails in the bar you’re in, then she’s off to do other bars. You’ll have to tell her if you like the drink, of course.
Let me know if you want to be one of them (one of the readers, I mean. Although I fully support drinking a cocktail, a handcrafted, well-prepared one, while you read. And only if you don’t drive after, of course!)
‘Til then, take care!
S
Intriguing, carry on
