Chapter 3

Sundaymorning went by in a blur. The only person Bette could think of was Tina. She usually spend her Sundays with Shane but Shane had a date with her girlfriend Carmen. They hadn’t seen each other for awhile due to the fact that Carmen had a lot of gigs lately. She was an upcoming DJ and a pretty good one. So Shane wanted to spent some quality time with her girl.
Bette understood this and she was happy with the time she’d spent alone. She decided to explore the black area of the hood. Tina had told her where to go so she didn’t loose her way.

The weather was nice and almost unnoticed she passed the “border” of the hood. She knew that she entered another part of her neighborhood because of the music she heard. She could hear all kinds of music, latin, jazz and even some old soul music like the Supremes, old Motown Sound. People were sitting outside enjoying their Sunday. Some were coming from church. She had to admit, she always felt like home when she was among colored people.
Bette walked and looked around and loved the scenes she was seeing. It reminded her of her childhood when she, her sister and her mom would go to church. Her father did join them in the beginning but at a certain point he didn’t come with them no more.
What Bette remembered were the songs she and her sister were singing when they got home. Then she heard that voice………

“What the fuck! That’s Kit!”

She stopped to listen where she heard the voice coming from. She walked in the direction from where she heard the voice came from. It was a little establishment, too small to be noticed, named “J’s Joint”. If Bette wouldn’t have heard the voice coming out, she wouldn’t have noticed the place. She walked in and let her eyes adjust to the shadow. When her eyes were adjusted, she saw a girl singing on a tiny stage. She sung a song, she and Kit use to sing. She could have sworn that it was Kit singing. She knew the song by heart. It was one of her favorites. Bette was so mesmerized by the girls voice and her voice reminded her so much of Kit’s, that she didn’t notice that she was singing along and out loud. She sang the second voice something she always did when she and Kit use to sing. Kit would do the lead and she’d sang second voice. Bette’s voice blended perfectly with the girl’s. While singing, Bette approached the stage. The girl heard her singing and was impressed. She beckoned Bette to come closer.
The audience that was in, was flabbergested. Who was that wonderful mocha skin woman that sang so beautifully in second voice. And she knew the lyrics, she felt the song and boy did she had some pipes.
Bette ended up on stage and sang the rest of the song with the girl. When the song ended they both had an standing ovation of the audience. After receiving the applause, Bette and the girl left the stage and went for a drink.
