The owner felt that he shouldn’t push Bette any further but he loved her voice and he really wanted her to do some gigs in his joint.

Bette enjoyed the rest of the afternoon. Listening to Candice who’s voice reminded her of her sister’s, really brought back memories. Some good, most of them bad.
After her last song Candice sat with Bette to have a drink before leaving for her next gig.

“Tell me, Candice, how come you have such a low voice for a girl with your stature, no offense.”

“No offense taken. You’re not the first person asking. Usually people with my stature have high voices. But in my family all the women that sing have low voices. My mother’s voice is very low but she has the stature to back it up. She decends from a family of singers. Her mother, grandmother and so on were great gospel singers and Blues singers with low voices for female singers. A lot of times people thought it was a man singing when my mother sang. While the men in my family have rather high voices. Funny, huhh….?”

“Well, you have a beautiful voice and as I said before, it reminded me of my sister’s voice. That’s why I walked in here. I thought it was her singing.”

“How long haven’t you seen her?”

“Much too long, too many bad things happened.”

Once again Candice had the feeling she shouldn’t ask any further. It was up to Bette if she wanted to share that part of her life with her. In fact Candice was really interested in Kit. Kit was one of her favorite singers. But Bette couldn’t tell her much. It was Candice telling Bette how her sister fared.

“Okay, take care Bette. I’m here every Sunday. So drop by and join me on stage if you like. In fact, Sundays are the days were it’s free for the audience to come on stage and jam with the band playing. Being it by singing or playing an instrument.
Oh, before I leave, this here is for you.”

Candice gave Bette an envelope.

“What is it?”

“See for yourself and remember, every Sunday. Bye, got to run. The next gig is waiting.”

Candice left, leaving a surprised Bette behind. Bette stood up, she looked at the time and it was 6.30 p.m. Time to go home and make dinner. Tomorrow was another day of work.
When she walked to the bar to pay for her drinks, the owner said it was on the house.
